About the Item
Paula Cahill's linear abstract compositions are often comprised of a single, luminous line that meanders, changes color, and seamlessly connects back to itself. The work itself measures 10" x 13" and is framed with white mat and simple, contemporary white wood frame to measure 18" x 21", under glass.
"Line is the predominant subject in my paintings. I strive to push the historical conversation into the contemporary, elevating the integral role line has played in art, design, and the sciences since its early appearance in rock and cave drawings.
As I prepare to paint, I mix up to 100 gradients of color derived from my memories of scuba diving among tropical fish on the worldʼs coral reefs. By repeatedly laying down the colorful gradients one brushstroke at a time, I create paintings comprised of a single luminous line that meanders and changes color hundreds of times with a light quality, reminiscent of the bioluminescence that emanates from sea-life. Ultimately, these paintings offer viewers an interactive and contemplative experience through the act of visual tracking. " - Paula Cahill
Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Cahill pursued an education in the arts after relocating to the Philadelphia area. She studied the figure for many years before transitioning to complex, abstract paintings. Her paintings are exhibited in the U.S. and have garnered regional awards including "Best of Show" in the "Celebration of Life" exhibit at the Perelman Center, and honorable mentions at Goggleworks and the Abington Art Center.
Cahill's paintings are held in private, public, and corporate collections including Temple University, Capital One, and PNC Bank Corporation. Her studio is located in Philadelphia, PA.
This piece was exhibited in a solo exhibition organized by Seraphin Gallery at the Yard, 2018.
