About

Leonor Fini, pseudonym of Eleonor Fini, born in Buenos Aires (Argentina) on August 30, 1908 (or 1907 for some sources) and died in Paris on January 18, 1996, is a surrealist painter, engraver, lithographer, theater designer and French writer of Italian origin. Eleonor Fini was born from the marriage of Herminio Fini, a wealthy Argentinian businessman, and Malvina Braun, a native of Trieste. The marital disagreement (her father is said to be both tyrannical, very religious but also very playful) means that it is eighteen months after the birth of the child that Malvina, fleeing the vast house of Buenos Aires, located on a island owned by Herminio Fini and taking his daughter, returns to Trieste, then still located in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (the city will become Italian in 1921). Eleonor Fini - hers call her "Lolò" - spends her childhood in this way (the repeated unsuccessful kidnapping attempts by her father in order to bring her back to Argentina force her to be disguised as a boy for years) and her adolescence with her mother and her maternal family. In a very cultivated bourgeois environment, she is "a pampered child, but impossible, expelled from schools and feeding on the treasures of the family library": her uncle Ernest Braun, restores Valentina Zacca, "can be considered as the pygmalion of her artistic education. . A man of great culture, he holds such a large number of books that he built in his house a real library where Eleonor tastes the philosophy of disguise and the intoxication of becoming and appearance preached by Friedrich Nietzsche ”. Viennese and Italian influences collide in Trieste and she thus acquired a cosmopolitan culture, bathed in the avant-garde literary and intellectual circles specific to the city and imbued with the thought of Sigmund Freud, thus frequenting Gillo Dorfles, Umberto Saba, Italo Svevo and Roberto Bazlen, also interested in the "flayed visions of Max Klinger or Gustav Klimt". Rejecting the legal studies for which her family intended her, she began to paint at the age of fifteen, also took drama lessons for a short period. It is in her childhood that Leonor Fini draws the roots of her personality by evoking herself: “still a child, from one day to the next, I discovered the attraction of masks and costumes. Dressing up is the instrument to have the sensation of a change of dimension, species, space. Dressing up, dressing up is an act of creativity. And this applies to oneself who become other characters or their own character. It is a matter of inventing oneself, of being transformed, of being apparently as changeable and multiple as one can feel inside oneself. It is the exteriorization in excess of fantasies that one carries in oneself, it is a creative expression in the raw state ”. Generally said to be self-taught, Nadia Pastorcich nevertheless restores her as introduced very young into the world of the artists of Trieste, calling her a pupil of Edmondo Passauro (1893-1969) and citing among her very first paintings her portraits of the painters Carlo Sbisà (1899-1964). ) and Arturo Nathan (it) (1891-1944). She left her family at the age of 17 to settle in Milan where her first solo exhibition was held in 1929, revealing a painting "subjecting herself to the austere discipline of Gothic art and the Italian Renaissance", thus orienting herself towards classicism and tonal painting, following the example of Carlo Carrà. She is working with Achille Funi on the Mosaic Riding of the Amazons which will be presented in 1933 at the 5th Triennial being held at the Palazzo dell'Arte in Milan.
