Linda Newman Boughton
The Letter (Large Black & White Ballpoint Pen Drawing of Civil War Soldiers)

2011

About the Item

60 x 48 inches black ballpoint pen drawing on cotton Arches paper. Hung with two dark red powder coated aluminum bars. This large, vertical black and white ballpoint pen drawing was made by Linda Newman Boughton in 2011. The dramatic yet modern drawing on strong cotton Arches paper is a depiction of a notorious photograph taken by Mathew Brady of three Civil War soldiers leaning on a tree. While two soldiers look off into the distance, one is concentrated on a letter. The extremely detailed portrait is made solely with black ballpoint pen. Under close inspection one can see the multitude of sweeping and crosshatching lines the artist used to create the portrait. The soldier's uniforms, faces, and upper tree bark have been given the most detail while the background and other features are given sparing detail. The work is signed in the lower right corner. It is installed with two dark red powder coated aluminum bars so one can suspend the work from a wall without having it framed behind glass. There is a traction strip to grip the paper along the inside of each aluminum bar. About the work: Linda Newman Boughton’s life-sized ballpoint pen drawings of notorious Civil War soldiers pay a reverent homage to some of our earliest freedom fighters. Inspired by a collection of photographs taken by Mathew Brady, one of America’s first photographers best known for documenting the Civil War, Boughton imparts a vibration to the memories of historical icons with frenzied, yet contained movements of ballpoint pen. Static symbols of bravery and courage are softened with Boughton’s touch of whimsy derived from her mundane medium as we revisit a generation who secured life and liberty for our future. About the artist: A self taught painter and lover of portraiture, Linda has exhibited her paintings at The James Grey Gallery at Bergamot Station and has been in several group shows in Los Angeles, a couple at The Long Beach Museum and a juried show at The Chautauqua Institute in New York.
