About the Item

Raymond Pettibon & Marcel Dzama artist book 2016 featuring collaborative Hand Drawing: Featuring an original signed collaborative drawing by the duo on the back cover of this limited edition collaborative zine, the drawing playfully explores Dzama and Pettibon's love for baseball ("All our Bats"). Well-suited for framing. Dzama / Pettibon is the first collaborative zine between Marcel Dzama and Raymond Pettibon. It was issued at Printed Matter's 2015 New York Art Book Fair and contains a series of corpse drawings produced by the duo. The zine quickly sold out and was reprinted when David Zwirner held a successive collaboration of Dzama and Pettibon called "Forgetting the Hand" in 2016. Medium: Printed artist book/zine with ink drawing on the reverse. Softcover with color and black and white illustrations. Approx. 20-30+ pages. 8.5 x 11 inches. Very good to excellent overall condition. Unique ink drawing signed by both artists. Book itself published from a limited edition of 200. Published by Zwirner Books, 2015. About Raymond Pettibon (American b. 1957): Having emerged from the Southern California DIY culture and its punk-rock sensibility, Raymond Pettibon fuses together youthful edginess and political engagement. Drawing from disparate cultural sources—from Marcel Proust to the Bible—the artist’s cartoon-inspired ink drawings on unframed paper recall the look of fanzines and concert flyers, however with an often cryptic semblance of narrative. More recently, Pettibon’s works have been a sustained critique of the Iraq War and American foreign policy, such as No Title ("Why press him?") (2007), which depicts George W. Bush with bloodied hands and surrounded by pointed, ironic commentary. Pettibon was a recipient of the Whitney's Bucksbaum award in 2004. Marcel Dzama: Often compared to outsider artist Henry Darger, Marcel Dzama’s small ink and watercolor drawings of hybrid characters, resemble story illustrations. Interspersed with a range of references including Surrealist film, Dadaism and Soviet-era prop art, his work more often recalls folk and craft storytelling traditions. Dzama also works in sculpture and video and has experimented with puppetry and costumes. His work has been used as cover art for bands such as They Might Be Giants, Beck, and The Weakerthans; and his costume designs have been seen in music videos, including the video for the Bob Dylan’s When the Deal Goes Down.

The art world was also much smaller at the time, so if you mailed out 200 invites, you were reaching a good core of the art world." (Rosen). Raymond Pettibon is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There's a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn't abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. He went on to produce cover art for Sonic Youth, the Minutemen, and the Foo Fighters. In 2017, the artist was the subject of the major retrospective “Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work,” held at the New Museum in New York, where he currently lives and works. Today, his works can be found in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others.
