About the Item

Sandi Gehring (1957), American artist living and working in Amsterdam. Education; Art Students League, NY and Wackers Academie, Amsterdam. Currently represented by galleries in Paris and London. Her artwork is part of private and commercial collections in New York and Europe. Abstraction is the best term to describe the artwork of Sandi Gehring. Bold shapes and colours are her interpretation of various landscapes. She constructs her paintings and drawings. The shapes contained within the composition are intuitive; one shape informing the next, one color dictating what color will follow, keeping in mind the balance between negativepositive, light-dark, warm-cold. This direct approach is what allows the simplicity to stand strong. Drawings are in pastel and the larger canvases are executed with oil paint. It is powerful to see a pastel composition reinterpreted onto a much larger format using a different medium. Her artwork is not an obvious or outspoken commentary of events but more an inner voice expressing emotion about the moment, allowing the viewer a moment of contemplation.

Ruello’s formal investigation of how we move through and disrupt various environments (digital, analog, and in-between) is rendered through these graphic elements. As he notes, “As a result of this disruption, the array is no longer stable or predictable — visual illusions and shifting figure/ground relationships begin to emerge.” Ruello’s work stems from an enjoyment in the tension between the stable and the unpredictable. Though not figural, his work presents elements that are recognizable from our visual vernacular. Digital screens, popular science...
