Signed lower right, 'C.A. Bartels' for Cornelius Anton Bartels (Dutch, born 1890) and painted circa 1945.
A still-life with a sculpture of the Daoist immortal, Liu Haichan, with a blue-and-white porcelain plate and a jade-glazed pot set against an embroidered shawl.
A member of the Hague School, Cornelius Anton Bartels was a teacher and realist painter. In the 1930's, he moved to Iowa where, in 1950, he was appointed artist-in-residence at Central College. Bartels was a also member of the art association Malkasten in Düsseldorf.
