David Dew Bruner
Single Bottle IX: Abstract Morandi Bottle Still Life Pencil Drawing, Framed

2022

About the Item

Abstract cubist style still life graphite drawing inspired by Giorgio Morandi's bottle paintings “Single Morandi Bottle IX” by Hudson Valley artist, David Dew Bruner, made in 2022 Graphite on paper in a mid century modern ivory and green frame with linen inlay Sight dimensions: 14 x 11 inches Framed dimensions: 22 x 19 x 2 inches Signed by the artist on front, lower right Excellent condition, ready to hang as is The frame exhibits some wear consistent with age, which is an intentional decision made by the artist. This graphite drawing was made by David Dew Bruner in an abstracted cubist style where the artist drew continuous lines in the shape of a bottle, creating a shard-like effect. Through the continuous layering of the graphite pencil the artist makes interesting organic and cubist shapes, further abstracting the still life. The drawing is completed with multiple layers of graphite and at close range the viewer can notice under layers that were erased and redrawn. The drawing is paired with a mid-century modern frame from the artist's collection. The frame exhibits some wear consistent with age which is an intentional decision of the artist's. About the artist: When he’s not designing stained glass or city park gardens, David Dew Bruner unleashes yet another facet of his talents via graphite drawings. A wealth of knowledge, both studied and intuitive, Bruner finds inspiration in many of his artistic predecessors. In his process he retains a resonating detail from a particular series of work and then reinterprets and reassembles the influence into his own drawing experience. Oftentimes, drawings are the accumulation of up to four pre-existing images, as an ode to Rauschenberg's erased DeKooning piece, drawn and erased any number of times until the pinnacle of Bruner's vision is achieved. Bruner has the eye of a hawk, and his years spent in dealing antiques means he knows a treasure when he finds one. Therefore, his studio, once an old train depot in Valatie, NY, has been tastefully converted to not only house his personal collection of art and mid century modern fixtures, but also to store a stockpile of vintage and modern frames. As he zealously produces one inspired work on paper after the next, he predestines a frame for each drawing before it is completed. In recent years, the artist has made two new series inspired by Morandi's bottle still lifes and Francis Bacon's portraits. The likeness of each artist's subject is expressed on paper, re-envisioned through Bruner's characteristic style of excitedly applied graphite that produce shard-like fragments embedded with deep interwoven marks. David Dew Bruner will also feature work inspired by Richard Lindner’s figures and Velasquez's Infanta Margarita.

Specifically Nowhere, Yellow (Abstract Geometric Painting with Grids on Yellow)
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Large abstract geometric painting with intricate line work in pencil and gouache on a bright yellow background "Specifically, Nowhere (Yellow)" made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022 gouache, acrylic, pencil, and colored pencil on paper, mounted on panel 48 x 48 inches unframed, 50 x 50 inches with a dark brown stained wood floater frame Surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish Signed, verso Excellent condition and ready to hang This large abstract geometric painting was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a bright yellow background overlaid with intricate line work in graphite and colored pencil. Thousands of hand drawn lines serve as a backdrop for a bold geometric form in a dusty violet and dark gray gridded pattern that references "an imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on paper is mounted to wood panel and complemented with a dark stained wood floater frame. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang as is. The surface is protected with four coats of an archival UV protective varnish. More about the work: Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. Artist Statement: My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. Pencil Automobile Car Drawing
By Jacques Villon
Located in Fredericksburg, VA
Jacques Villon, born Gaston Émile Duchamp on July 31, 1875, in Damville, France, was a pivotal figure in the development of modern art. As the elder brother of Marcel Duchamp, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti, Villon was part of a family that profoundly influenced 20th-century art. He adopted the pseudonym Jacques Villon to distinguish himself from his siblings, and began his career as a cartoonist and illustrator. Villon's contributions to modern art were acknowledged internationally, with exhibitions at prestigious venues such as the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Indépendants, and the Armory Show in New York in 1913. His work influenced the trajectory of abstract art, and his legacy is celebrated in numerous museums and collections worldwide. While this drawing isnt common of his bolder cubist style, it shows his skill in sketching and shapes which add a dimension to the abstract nature of this automobile drawing...
