contemporary AbEx artist Emanuel Buckvar successfully refutes the idea that there is nothing left to explore with drip or splatter paintings. Buckvar explores ideas of space and volume in his work. He frequently "paints in the dark" so as to focus on the process of creation as opposed to the thing created.
From the time he was a child, Emanual Buckvar loved, collected, studied and sold art purchased from estates, so for Christmas 2010, his wife bought him a batch of paint, stretched canvases, brushes. Then she had to nag him for months to give it a shot. Finally, he gave did, deciding to do some action paintings (outside at dusk in his driveway). To his astonishment, he sold several to customers for thousands of dollars each.

American artist John Zinsser was born in New York City in 1961 and studied art, art history and literature at Yale University (where he did his senior thesis on Andy Warhol). He co-founded Journal of Contemporary Art in 1987 and lectures at The New School. He has had over 40 solo shows in the U.S. and Europe, and is known in Europe for his association with monochrome painters of a previous generation. Zinsser has been a devotee of postwar Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism for decades.
A native New Yorker, he came of age as an artist during the late 1980s and early 1990s alongside other now established abstract painters, including Richmond Burton, Gail Fitzgerald, Daniel Levine, Carl Ostendarp, Kate Shepherd, Cary Smith, Dan Walsh, Mary Weatherford, and Stephen Westfall, among others. Zinsser’s material paintings and conceptual drawings often pay homage to, expand upon, and subvert earlier precedents in NYC’s painting history, from Abstract Expressionism to Radical Painting to Post-Modernism. Zinsser interned for the architect Peter Eisenman, when he was director of the Institute of Architecture and Urban Studies in New York City.

Roberto Lauro is a British-Swiss Post War & Contemporary artist who was born in 1932.
Roberto Lauro was born in 1932 in Gorey Harbor on the island of Jersey (Great Britain) the son of a Swiss mother, Rosa Ramseier, from Oberdiessbach / Emmental, Switzerland, and and Italian father Innocenzo Roberto Lauro, born in Mondovi, Italy. In 1941 he moved to Switzerland with his mother. 1949-1953 he lived in Gunten (Switzerland) where he did an Apprenticeship as a lithograph and offset printer and graphic designer in Thun. There he was introduced to the color theory of Johannes Itten by Hermann Oberli at the Bern School of Applied Arts. From 1953 to 1955 he worked as a fine art printer in Norway where he was influenced by the color theory of Edvard Munch. These works bears the influence of Russian artist Andre Lanskoy, Tachisme and the Cobra artists Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Asger Jorn, and Joseph Noiret.
In 1955-1956 he worked as an offset printer in Amsterdam (Netherlands). Visit to the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheidsonderwijs. In 1957 he returned to Gunten, Switzerland. Where he started working in printmaking and and oil painting. He resumed his studies at the Bern School of Applied Arts. He was greatly impacted and influenced by abstract art on the occasion of a large Paul KIee exhibition. In 1958 he moved to Zurich where he worked part-time work as an offset copyist; fulfilling graphic orders for advertising agencies. In 1962 he took his final examination as graphic designer at the Zurich School of Applied Arts. In 1980 he begins his development of three-dimensional picture objects, Sculpture, detachment from the canvas, using metal as a support and play space for light and color. By 1981 he has turned full time to fine art. He spends the next years growing and developing his considerable talent. Inspired by classical music, the rhythm, mood and lightness of which form the basis for the large swings and loops of his colorfully lacquered metal and blown glass sculptures. These are "pensieri", thought sketches that capture the emotions in countless versions. There is something dance-like about his rotating sculptures. Everything becomes music and the rhythm of colors. This simple, yet elegant, acrylic on un-stretched canvas represents an impressive display of the energy and attention to design with which Ushio Shinohara approaches his artwork.
Born in Tokyo in 1932, Ushio Shinohara (nicknamed "Gyu-chan"), is a Japanese Neo-Dadaist artist who has lived and worked in the United States since 1969. Shinohara is well known for his boxing paintings - Shinohara's own style of action painting - which are made by dipping a pair of custom made boxing gloves into paint and unleashing his fists onto swathes of un-stretched canvas. Ushio works in several mediums including painting, printmaking, drawing and sculpture.
In 1960 Ushio helped found the Neo-Dadaism Organizers. Their mission: deviate from any conventional form of art. Akin to European Dadaists, who’s art sought to reveal the customary and often repressive conventions of logical order and rationality, the Neo-Dadaism Organizers embodied a similar ethos. This can chiefly be seen in akushon, meaning “action”, which is the practice of emphasizing the human body as an artistic medium. For Ushio, this sensibility is encapsulated in what has become his personal trinity “be speedy, beautiful, and rhythmical.”
Ushio's bright and frequently oversized work has exhibited at prestigious institutions internationally, including the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art; Centre Georges Pompidou; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Japan Society, New York; the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Busan; the Dallas Museum of Art and the Tate Modern, among others. Ushio Shinohara's work was included in International Pop, a landmark exhibition at the Walker Art Center that chronicles the global emergence of Pop art from the 1950s through the early 1970.
In addition to an extensive exhibition history, Shinohara has also been a prolific performer — demonstrating the process of his boxing paintings live and in-person at various institutions. A selection of these performances include the National Museum of Art, Osaka; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; Austria Museum of Applied Art, Vienna; Busan Art Museum, South Korea; Musée d’Art Contemporain, Lyon; The State University of New York at Potsdam; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Dallas Museum of Art; and Carlton University, Ottawa.

This painting by Michelle Weddle consists of bright red zig-zagging ribbon-like brush strokes on a background of white tones and deep blue. The curvilinear shapes that compose the background are large blocks of white, off-white, light blue, and dark blue.
Michelle received a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas, Austin in 2007, with concentrations in Painting, Drawing, Sculpture and Serigraphy. Early exhibit highlights include group shows in Denver and Dallas between 2008 and 2010, a solo show in Boulder, Colorado at the Dairy Center for the Arts in 2011, and additional group shows between 2012 and 2014 in Houston, Texas. The two major bodies of work produced during those years, totaling 30 large scale oil paintings have been purchased by collectors in both Colorado and Texas, while a series of 100 smaller works in acrylic and oil have been sold locally and shipped to locations around the United States.
More recently, in mid 2018, she returned to painting with a fresh perspective, venturing for the first time into abstraction.
In 2020, Michelle showed with Mirus Gallery and 40 West Gallery in Denver winning ‘Best in Show,’ and an ‘Artistic Award of Excellence,’ with 40 West. Michelle’s work was featured in the Spring 17 Edition of ArtMaze Magazine, an international publication produced in the UK, and was included in ‘I Like Your Work Podcast’s summer exhibition titled ‘Congruence,’ curated by Bridgette Mayer with Bridgette Mayer Gallery.
