Carborundum and drypoint on copper. Printing on BFK Rives paper 250 g. Unframed. Pierre Muckensturm added printmaking to his oeuvre since 2010. The engraving and printing process allows him to further explore notions of time and perspective. Muckensturm is inspired by the concepts of calmness, constancy and temporality. His work visually expresses a sense of harmony with time. In his prints, he begins with gestural marks, examining them in detail, transforming them gradually, exploring how they communicate differently as he alters their size, shape, depth, magnitude and orientation over time. Edition 7/15 Pierre Muckensturm is a French abstract painter and print maker. His visual language is one of harmony, calm and timelessness built around softly textured surfaces and a muted, black and white palette. Born in Strasbourg, France, he currently lives and works in Colmar. In 2004, Muckensturm began working with oil on large scale canvases. He isolates gestural elements, enlarging them on the picture plane to explore their presence in relation to the surrounding emptiness. He develops the paintings methodically, exploring the process of transformation the canvas undergoes in the painting process. Working the surface into a texture that belies its age, Muckensturm achieves a balance of intensity and tranquility. INSPIRATION Muckensturm is inspired by the concepts of calmness, constancy and temporality. His work visually expresses a sense of harmony with time. Initially a figurative painter, he discovered abstraction in 2004 on a visit to Notre Dame du Haut, a Modernist chapel in Ronchamp, France, designed by Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris, otherwise known as Le Corbusier. The simplicity of its forms brought Muckensturm a feeling of tranquility. He began seeking ways to directly express how felt that day. His search brought him into contact with the work of Julius Bissier, whose simple, organic, gestural brushstrokes, evocative of Taoist painting...

Untitled
Located in Fairlawn, OH
Untitled Signed in pencil lower right (see photo) Edition: 25 (9/25) (see photo) Engraving, drypoint & carborundum Printed by the artist Condition: Excellent, slight residue on reverse Sheet: 9 7/8 x 12 3/4" Image/Plate: 5 x 7" Note: Goetz was born in the United States, moved to Paris and became a noted Surrealist artist and journalist of the surrealist movement. As a printmaker, Goetz invented carborundum printmaking in the 1960’s. In 1968, La gravure au carborundum, a treatise on carborundum printing, was published by the Maeght Gallery. It was prefaced by Joan Miró. Goetz created many abstract prints using this method. Other artists such as Antoni Clavé, Antoni Tàpies, and in particular Joan Miró, employed carborundum printing in their work. Henri Bernard Goetz (1909-1989) Henri Bernard Goetz was born 29 September 1909 in New York, in a family of French and American origin. He studied at Harvard University and the Grand Central Art School before moving to Paris in 1930 where he continued his studies at the Academies Julian and Academies Ozenfant in Montparnasse. After a brief return to the US in the early 1930’s he settled permanently in France, taking a Parisian studio next to Victor Brauner. With Brauner Goetz became involved with the Surrealist group and was soon a highly accomplished exponent. 1935 would be a year of major importance for Goetz: he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Surindependants, he married the Dutch painter Christine Boumeester and he met Hans Hartung, who would become a close lifelong friend. In 1937 Goetz held his first solo show at Galerie Van Leer, Paris. During the war, having neglected to become naturalized French citizens, Goetz and Boumeester became illegal aliens and both worked in the resistance movement. They printed leaflets on a simple printing press and created posters to paste...

Etching 1916 Number II
Located in New York, NY
Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), Etching 1916 Number II, drypoint, signed in pencil lower right, titled, numbered (No. 9) and dated lower left [also with initials and date in the plate lower right]. Reference: Roethel 154, only state, edition of 10. In excellent condition (the barest handling fold at sheet edge), printed on a heavy ivory wove paper, the full sheet with full margins, 4 7/8 x 3 1/4, the sheet 17 1/2 x 13 inches, archival mount with window mat. A fine fresh impression of this great rarity, printed in a dark brown ink. Kandinsky created this drypoint (erroneously named Etching 1916) in early 1916 while staying with Gabriel Munter in Stockholm during the winter of 1915-16. This is from the second series of drypoints he made; the first was in the year 1913-14. Provenance: Kornfeld Auction, Bern, June 2007. The tiny size of this edition (10) makes this print a great rarity within the Kandinsky’s printed...

Riguer bleue
Located in Malmo, SE
Published by edition GKM. Unframed. Edition: 40 ex. Signed by the artist. Free shipment worldwide. “With just a few strokes of his brush he conjures up an entire world. James Coignard extends the boundaries between concrete and abstract. He knows how to create chromatic melodies that shift in timbre from cobalt blue to blood red. His pictures are an artistic epicentre where lines, letters and numbers meld with vigorous swashes of colour.” That is how the writer Johan Persson has described the artist’s paintings. With this exhibition we honour James Coignard, showing some of his last carborundum engravings and paintings as well as presenting the book “L’œuvre gravé de James Coignard” volume VI. In this edition, we have gathered together all the engravings that James Coignard produced between June 2005 and his decease, on 7 March 2008. Behind him he left many fond memories and a life’s work as a great artist. James Coignard’s principal modes of expression were oil on canvas and gravure au carborundum, but also in bronze and glass sculptures as well as in ceramics. His work has been shown on more than 400 exhibitions, primarily in Central Europe and Scandinavia, but also in Canada and the USA. His first Swedish exhibition was at Malmö Museum in 1956. The early 1970s saw the start of a long-term liaison with Galleri Östermalm in Stockholm, owned by Editions Sonet. They came to represent him in Scandinavia and edited several volumes of his graphic works. It was not until 2003 that we at Galleri GKM Siwert Bergström...

The Pequod Meets the Jeroboam: Her Story from the Moby Dick Deckle Edges Series
Located in Long Island City, NY
Two whaling ships meet out at sea, one named after an Indigenous American tribe and the other after the first king of the northern Kingdom of Israel, the latter set upon by a malignant epidemic and a sailor gone mad with the belief that he is the Archangel Gabriel. Both ships are plagued, one by sickness and the other by obsession, and neither heeds the warnings of the mad prophet. Built out in layers of paper that have been printed using techniques like lithography and etching, this colossal print by Frank Stella employs careful color against warping black and white grids to give the impression of control slowly slipping and giving way to chaos. Photos don't give this piece proper justice; it is carefully collaged in purposeful layers that constantly pull the eye in every direction and the viewer closer and closer in. The Pequod Meets the Jeroboam: Her Story...

Framed Size: approx. 33 x 28 inches Cat. Rais. Poliakoff & Schneider, XVI Found./Pub. XXe Siècle Serge Poliakoff was a Russian-born French modernist painter belonging to the 'New' Ecole de Paris (Tachisme). Serge Poliakoff was born in Moscow in 1906, the thirteenth of fourteen children. His father, a Kyrgyz, supplied the army with horses that he bred himself and also owned a racing stable. His mother was heavily involved with the church, and its religious icons fascinated him. He enrolled at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, but fled Russia and the Russian Revolution in 1917. He arrived in Constantinople in 1920, living off the profits from his talent as a guitarist. He went on to pass through Sofia, Belgrade, Vienna, and Berlin before settling in Paris in 1923, all the while continuing to play in Russian cabarets. In 1929 he enrolled at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière*. His paintings remained purely academic until he discovered, during his stay in London from 1935 to 1937, the abstract art and luminous* colours of the Egyptian sarcophagi. It was a little afterwards that he met Wassily Kandinsky, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, and Otto Freundlich...
