After Giuseppe Cesari (1568-1640) After St George Slaying the Dragon
Located in Sydney, NSW
About the Painting: St George Slaying the Dragon is a genre painting derived from the legend, St George, a soldier venerated in Christianity who battles and defeats a dragon. The tale recalls a dragon who extorted a village of their worldly possessions, once the villagers had depleted all their livestock, money and trinkets they began to sacrifice humans to the dragon as a tribute once a year. The villagers were content with the arrangement until a princess was chosen as the next offering. St George then rescues the princess and ultimately he slays the dragon, thus liberating the oppressed villages. A moral anecdote of good over evil and a genre work that has been explored by artists since its conception, with iconography throughout European art movements for hundreds of years and still up until this day. About the Artist: Giuseppe Cesari...

St Paul With Sword and Book, Mannerist School, Oil on Copper
Located in Stockholm, SE
Mannerism, derived from the Italian term "maneria," which simply means "style," was an artistic movement that emerged in the later years of the Italian High Renaissance, around 1520, and extended into the early 17th century. It is often referred to as the "stylish style" due to its emphasis on self-conscious artifice rather than realistic depiction. Historians debate whether Mannerism should be classified as a style, a movement, or a period. In contrast to the harmonious ideals embraced by renowned artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci, Mannerist painters took a step further and created compositions that were almost bizarre. They introduced fresh color schemes, elongated proportions, and exaggerated anatomy of figures, portraying them in convoluted and serpentine poses. These artists skillfully exhibited their techniques and abilities, aiming to evoke a sense of sophisticated elegance. Among the notable Mannerist painters are Jacopo da Pontormo, Bronzino, Lavinia Fontana...

A 17th Century Mythological Scene
Located in Stockholm, SE
This small yet captivating painting, crafted on a copper plate, dates back to the mid-1600s and was created by a Flemish artist. Subject Matter: The central figure in the artwork is Mercury, easily identified by his symbolic attributes like winged sandals, petasus, and caduceus. Beside him is a likely female figure, characterized by her attire and absence of weaponry. The depicted scene could represent two mythological tales: Mercury and Calypso: This interpretation suggests the artwork shows the moment Zeus sends Mercury to Calypso's island, Ogygia. Mercury is there to order Calypso to release Ulysses, whom she saved from a shipwreck but kept captive. The lush, wooded background and the three distant figures could hint at Ulysses' farewell to Calypso. Mercury and Herses: Another interpretation could be a scene from the love story of Mercury and Herses. The background figures might symbolize the sisters returning from a procession, while the forefront could be the initial meeting between Mercury and the most beautiful sister, Erse. Artistic Inspiration: The painting's landscape and setting are heavily influenced by the early 17th century Northern European art trends, especially the works of Jan Brueghel the Elder. However, the artwork stands apart with its unique luminescence in detailing and a distinctive approach to depicting figures. While the exact origin and artist remain somewhat mysterious, the style and treatment of light hint towards works close to Josse de Momper...

Venetian Sculpture 17th Century Wood Italian Old master Soldier Roma War Gold
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Venetian Baroque sculptor of the 17th century Full-length wooden sculpture of a Roman soldier Wood (walnut?) Carved, polychrome and gilded Dimensions: Total height: 118 cm. - Width: 49 cm. This valuable seventeenth-century wooden sculpture, which strikes for its sumptuous beauty, highlighted by the full-length construction as well as by the all-round finishing, is a work whose stylistic models allow us to attribute the work to a baroque carver active in the Venetian area in the Six hundred. The figure, which is realistically described especially in the splendid rendering of the clothes, cadenced in the drapery and in the sinuous movement of the body, stylistically refers to the rich and successful production of northern Italian sculptures, Venetian in particular, between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It is a sculpture depicting a Roman soldier, perhaps a centurion, placed on a decorated pedestal, on which a crown is carved into which two palms of martyrdom are intertwined. This iconographic detail could make us interpret the figure as part of a more articulated religious composition, probably one of the numerous centurions that enriched a Calvary or a Via Crucis. The excellent state of conservation finally allows you to fully appreciate the quality of the carving. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The sculpture in question is sold with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic card. We take care and organize the transport of the purchased works, both for Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers. It is also possible to see the painting in the Riva del Garda...

Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk
By John Goldar
Located in Saint Augustine, FL
An original copperplate engraving on laid paper by English artist John Goldar (1729-1795) titled "Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk", 1784. Comes from the "History of England" portfolio. Printed and published by Harrison & Co for Paul Rapin de Thoyras in London, UK. Recently framed in gold moulding and silk cotton mats from Holland. All archival. Framed size: 20.25" x 15.25". Platemark size: 12.25" x 8". Image size (with border): 8" x 6.75". Some faint foxing associated with age. In otherwise very good condition. Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk KG PC (1473 – 25 August 1554), was a prominent English politician and nobleman of the Tudor era. He was an uncle of two of the wives of King Henry VIII, namely Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, both of whom were beheaded, and played a major role in the machinations affecting these royal marriages. After falling from favour in 1546, he was stripped of his dukedom and imprisoned in the Tower of London, avoiding execution when Henry VIII died on 28 January 1547. He was released on the accession of the Roman Catholic queen, Mary I, whom he aided in securing her throne, thus setting the stage for tensions between his Catholic family and the Protestant royal line that would be continued by Mary I's half-sister, Elizabeth I. John Goldar, born at Oxford in 1729, resided in Charlotte Street, Blackfriars Road, Southwark. He made a couple of forays into print publishing on his own account (of John Dixon after William Lawrenson, and much later of naval prints...
