"Stars and Stripes" Americana Pop 23 Karat Gold Leaf/Red/Blue Oil, Flag Painting
Located in Wellesley, MA
"Stars and Stripes"
23 Karat Gold Leaf and Oil on Linen
26 x 50 Inches
Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a graphically idealized American flag.
"Stars and Stripes" is at once lovely and bold. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy while demanding serious attention, and the artist's simple distressed white wood double lattice frame is the perfect complement.
Also available is a smaller version of this painting, "American Standard" 18 x 34 inches, as well as a vertical variation "Vertical U.S. Flag" 34 x 18 inches. Additional variations of the American flag series are available without 23 karat gold leaf ("Reverse Image" in black and white, "Flag #4" in black, white and tan, and "Black and White" which is
black, gray and white).
The artist's "Canton" series of paintings focuses on stars only. Paintings from this series are available in navy blue with gold leaf stars ("Canton Major" 34 x 48 Inches), olive drab with gold leaf stars ("Canton Olive and Gold" 30 x 42 Inches), and all 23 karat gold leaf ("Starry Splendor" 30 x 42 Inches).
Gibbs is often commissioned to paint variations on her 'flags' and 'stars' to customize scale, orientation (horizontal or vertical) palette, and/or symbols of particular significance to the client.
Additionally available are flag paintings in various sizes inspired by the British flag with and without 23 karat gold leaf ("Sgt. Pepper Jack," "Union Jack Red and Gold," "Union Jack Navy and Gold," and "Union Jack White and Gold"), the Scottish flag...

Hedy

Hedy. Original color steelcut (alkyd oil paint on cut-out steel), 1985/90. Edition of 25 signed and numbered impressions on cut-out steel.
Tom Wesselmann is one of the biggest American pop artists today. Even he did not like being labeled a pop artist, it is hard to imagine that his artworks featuring consumer goods and assorted American icons would be considered anything but pop art. At first he was a follower of abstract expressionism, but later switched to figurative art. In the late ‘50s he produced a series of small format collages, which became the basis for his future nudes and still life. In 1963 he married Claire Selley, his most faithful model from the series Great American Nude, and other nudes. In his search for creative styles he began to produce three-dimensional works with the technique of assemblage, using everyday objects such as telephones and televisions. In the Still Life series he used advertising techniques and complemented traditional still life with mass consumption items taken directly from ads. In the ‘80s he began to work with metals and produced original works with a special laser. Over the next two decades he returned to large formats and the theme of the nude from the ‘60s, rounding off his career with The Sunset Nude series, inspired by the works of Matisse. Tom Wesselmann went down in history as one of the greatest representatives of pop art due to his exciting commercial images, his aggressive intervention in three dimensions, his choice of trivial motifs, their monumentalization, the use of stereotypes as a basis for his work and the choice of strong colors. Wesselmann’s aesthetic usage of everyday objects was done not in criticism of American consumerism and culture, but as a way to render Classical genres modern so as to explore the gap between art and contemporary life. This 'steel drawing' or doodle, as he called artwork from that series, shows Wesselmann's skills and innovation in terms of technology and media. ‘My original idea, that began the cut-outs, was to preserve the process and immediacy of my drawings from life, complete with the false lines and errors, and realize them in steel. It was as though the lines had just been miraculously drawn in steel. At the same time, I pursued another idea – to make tiny, very fast doodles, which I would then enlarge in cut-out metal, preserving the feel and spontaneity of the tiny sketch…' - said the artist. This laying model...

Keith Haring rose to prominence in 1980s New York within the East Village art scene alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, and Jenny Holzer. He bridged the gap between the art world and the street, graffiting city subways and sidewalks before committing to a studio practice. Haring united the appeal of cartoons with the raw energy of Art Brut artists such as Jean DuBuffet as he developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic that comprised energetic, boldly outlined figures against solid or patterned backdrops. His major themes included exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and the threat of nuclear holocaust; Haring boldly engaged with social issues, especially after receiving an AIDS diagnosis in 1987. Today, his work sells for seven figures at auction and has been the subject of solo shows at the Brooklyn Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Albertina Museum in Vienna, among other institutions.

Charlie Hewitt (b.1946) is a nationally known Maine-born painter, printmaker, and sculptor. His work is stylistically rooted in expressionism and surrealism, and is both playful and serious, a quality he shares with artists Alexander Calder, Joan Miro, Paul Klee, and his mentor Philip Guston, who was a major postwar figure of the New York School.
Hewitt grew up in a large working-class French Canadian family in the mill-working communities of Lewiston/Auburn and Brunswick, Maine.
Hewitt’s work is in numerous private and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Museum of Modern Art, NY; Library of Congress, Washington, DC; and in Maine at the Portland Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Museum of Art, and in the art museums at Bates, Bowdoin, and Colby colleges.

Diver UP! 24 Karat Gold
Located in New York, NY
Victor Spinelli was born in New York from and Italian family. Established in Ibiza, he attributes his origins in art to piloting a Hot Air balloon and travelling the world as a photographer. His works range from painting to sculpture and of course, photography. In 2019 he orchestrated the construction of an 8-foot wooden sculpture of my popular photograph “Diver UP” for Burning Man. The sculpture was torched on “The Mans” ashes after he burned to the ground and this symbolized metamorphoses of not only the evolution of Diver UP, but also a demarcation point in his career, thus beginning a new chapter within it. In 2020 he organizes the first edition of the Spin Art...
