Save the NEW Date for the Artist Reception: May 17, 2019, 5-9pm In these new works, Bergamini expands her practice of incorporating her neglected / failed artwork and unused paper scraps into new pieces - namely her "New York" series which loosely mimics the Big Apple's skyline through a carefully-crafted collection of these upcycled paper discards. In celebration of Earth Day and awareness of climate change, Bergamini will continue to pay tribute to her adopted city by accepting paper donations from her fellow New York City-based artists to create collaborative paper sculptures for the "New York" series. STATEMENT ABOUT THE WORK: From the City to the Cosmos By: Angelica Bergamini We are all connected: To each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. And to the rest of the universe, atomically. Neil deGrasse Tyson From the Particular to the Universal. From the Microcosmos to the Macrocosmos. From the City to the Cosmos. My Originem series (2018) - which is Latin for Origin - is a contemplation on our origins beyond the separation of borders, cultures, ethnicities, and religions. Meditating on the Cosmos, the original place of birth, allows us to rediscover and worship our oneness. The NY series was born in 2005 while I was moving to NY. My landscape had changed ( my previous works often had the line of the horizon, the sea and the sky, my original landscape, where I was born). I always saved as many scraps of paper from my old works, experiments, tests, anything as I could since I was at the Fine Art Academy in Florence, so the NY series came out of this "trash.” More than ten years later, my landscape has changed again - from the City to the Cosmos - but the material is again repurposed, recycled paper ( my Originem series is made of paper portions I saved from my last show). The NY landscape takes shape today as a collaborative project, where scraps of other artists' works become part of the piece I am going to make while creating a conversation about ecology, community, interconnection. Each piece of paper is a "story," linked to somebody. Each work will become a sort of collaboration while also addressing the importance to care for the environment ( reuse, recycle and reduce). About "the City": it's NYC because I moved here, and it is also NY for the many people, religions, languages, different cultures all living in the same place. So, the jump from the particular to the universal is more interesting for me because the city is a melting pot where we all coexist. With no walls and no borders! So it also my way to celebrate the city and its people. ARTIST BIO: Angelica Bergamini is an Italian born – New York-based artist. She spent academic years in Spain at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Granada and the Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid and graduated with honors in Painting from the Fine Arts Academy of Florence (Italy). Since 2006 she has been studying color psychology. Bergamini’s work explores the relationship between the personal and collective unconscious, generating a porosity between aesthetic and ethic values. Cross-cultural studies and interest for philosophy also guide great part of her creation which manifests through painting and paper-cuts assemblages, video, and sculptural installations. In 2012 she was commissioned by the Hyatt Union Square in New York a site-specific art project, and in 2015 her collaboration with Italian writer Chicca Gagliardo was presented at the Turin International Book Fair. Her works have been part of collective shows in New York (Tanja Grunert; White Box; BRIC Arts Media; Photo New York), Los Angeles (Torrance Art Museum), London (Chelsea Space), Paris (Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre), Stockholm (Färgfabriken), Milan (Pari&Dispari) and in Hong Kong (Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery). And part of private collections in the USA, Europe, China, and Israel. Her most recent solo show was at the Ivy Brown Gallery in NYC. She is currently working on a video series based on the animation of her mixed media on paper, and her latest video will be screened at the 55th Pesaro International Film Festival in Italy in June. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
