Cecilia Vicuña
Let The Truth Awake

2021

About the Item

Cecilia Vicuña (b. 1948 in Santiago, Chile; lives and works in New York and Santiago) integrates practices of poetry, performance, Conceptualism, and textile craft in response to pressing concerns of the modern world, including ecological destruction, human rights, and cultural homogenization. Born and raised in Santiago, she was exiled during the early 1970s after the violent military coup against President Salvador Allende. This sense of impermanence, and a desire to preserve and pay tribute to the indigenous history and culture of Chile, have characterized her work throughout her career. In 1977 Vicuna had an exhibition at the Fundación Gilberto Alzate Avendaño, in Bogotá that was an homage to the end of the Vietnam War. Many of the works included were made of painted fabrics and resembled banners. 'Let the Truth Awake' (2021) is rendered in a similar style, recalling these 1970s works. Here, Vicuna continues to engage in dialogue between Korean and Andean textile traditions and techniques, and translates the phrase “Let the Truth Awake” into Korean, Andean, and English, painting the words in oil on linen, which is hung from a bamboo rod like a flag or banner.

Fading pink (#1)
By Hernan Bas
Located in New York, NY
Hernan Bas is best known for his narratively rich scenes that feature a wide-range of references spanning art and literature, popular culture, kitsch, the occult, religion, and mythology. Across his works, Bas seeks to defamiliarize everyday experience through humor, revealing the surreal and absurd lurking beneath the mundane. In conceiving this flamingo sculpture series, Bas was inspired specifically by the 19th century novel ‘Against Nature’ by Joris-Karl Huysmans. In the novel, the main character, an astute dandy of epic proportions, decides to cover a pet tortoise's shell with ornate jewels in order to see how the light would glimmer on it as it slowly treaded across his carpets. Bas imagined a fictional character of his own, a "Florida Dandy," who would naturally want bright pink flamingos as pets. The ball and chain keep them from flying away and simultaneously constrain them to a certain territory. . . . Fading pink (#1), 2016-2017 resin, feathers, rug, galvanized metal buoy...
