About the Item
Through a meditative practice, Tan glues these various materials on wood panels in intricate patterns directly inspired by traditional Filipino tribal tattoos, regional textiles and the fabrics handwoven by her grandmother, a seamstress and embroiderer.
Tan’s works with their subtle colors variation, unique texture and complex designs are imbued with a strong, almost at times spiritual presence. Her quest, drawn from her childhood memories, is an expression of her unique artistic language.
These elaborate pieces are a testament to the power of personal history, embedded in larger narratives and a loving homage from the artist to her family and rich heritage.
