Edward Marecak
Mid-Century Modern Abstract Ink & Acrylic Painting in Green, Brown & White Tones

1946-1952

About the Item

This striking ink and acrylic on paper abstract artwork, titled Mystic Writing, was created by acclaimed Denver artist Edward Marecak (1919-1993). Featuring mystical symbols enclosed in blue and green rectangles with a border of brown squares, this piece captures the intricate and thought-provoking style Marecak is known for. The composition blends modern abstraction with symbolic mysticism, offering an enigmatic yet powerful visual experience. Signed by the artist in the lower right, it is presented in a custom frame with all archival materials and UV-protectant glass, ensuring long-term preservation. Provenance: Estate of Edward Marecak About the Artist: Edward Marecak, born to Slovakian immigrant parents, grew up immersed in folk tales and Slavic traditions, which profoundly influenced his later work. His early art education began in Cleveland at the Cleveland Institute of Art and continued at prestigious institutions like the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Following service in World War II, Marecak moved to Colorado and became known for his exploration of surrealist imagery and abstract forms, drawing inspiration from both European folklore and Native American art. Marecak's work evolved dramatically in the Colorado landscape, where he merged folk narrative with modern abstraction, especially influenced by the region’s natural beauty. This evolution led to paintings rich in symbolism, vibrant colors, and intricate designs. His use of symbols—such as witches, spirits, and mythological figures—transformed everyday imagery into surreal, dream-like compositions. A highly skilled painter and teacher, Marecak taught art for over two decades in Denver, balancing a career as a quiet, dedicated artist and mentor. Though he often worked outside the mainstream gallery system, his contributions have been recognized in exhibitions at prominent venues like the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and the Denver Art Museum. Notable Exhibitions and Collections: Marecak's work is housed in the collections of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Denver Art Museum, and the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art. His art continues to be celebrated for its intricate visual storytelling and emotive use of color.
