About the Item
In “Snake Eyes”, Eleanor Aldrich uses oil, silicone, enamel, thumbtacks, and sharpie on canvas to create a visceral exploration into a lounging back. The mixed-media painting investigates a shirt and jeans through layers of seeping silicone and an adornment of thumbtacks. A loose grid to the right of the figure faintly suggests a hammock or wrought iron chair whose sturdiness is questioned by the weight of the figure. Not even the edges of the painting can contain the body, as it simultaneously sags and rises off the canvas.
“Snake Eyes” is part of Eleanor Aldrich’s critically acclaimed show “Main Squeeze” at Channel to Channel in Nashville, TN. It has been featured in ArtForum, Burnaway, and the Nashville Scene. Commenting on modern painting’s use of the grid, Emily Weiner of ArtForum writes: "Eleanor Aldrich reconsiders this convention, favoring a grittier approach to both material and subject." Aldrich's use of the grid has also been explored by Burnaway writer Melinda Baker who states: "These latticed objects dominate the foreground of each work and serve as de facto modernist grids (albeit shabby ones) that are warped by the weight of the figures’ bodies pressing into them with surrealistic force." She continues: "The works merge painting and sculpture, as well as representation and abstraction, and teeter on the edge of image and object, tricking your perception."
