About the Item

Literature -Galerie Beyeler, From private collections, 8 février - 19 avril 1986. -Bruxelles, Palais des Beaux-Arts,Jean Arp. L'invention de la forme, 2004, (illustré p. 103). This collage is the original design for the work that Jean Arp created for the Unesco headquarters in Paris. In 1957, the UNESCO Committee for Architecture and Works of Art, in collaboration with the Committee of Artistic Advisors, selected eleven artists to carry out the artistic decoration of its permanent headquarters in Paris, inaugurated in 1958. One of the sculptural works commissioned in this context is a work by Jean Arp. Integrated into the architectural plan of the building, the “UNESCO constellation” was displayed on the outside wall of the library from 1958, before being moved inside and exhibited in the lobby of the Executive Council in the 1970s. For this monumental relief, Arp designed an open composition of four copper elements measuring 140 x 85 cm, 250 x 220 cm, 300 x 350 cm and 145 x 190 cm, which were placed freely on the wall “like hats that can be left behind Lift”, in his own words. The randomly chosen background, the wall, functions as a support and background as a relief element. This work was created as a continuation of other public commissions carried out in the 1950s, for example for the Graduate Center of Harvard University (USA, 1950) and for the campus of the University of Caracas (Venezuela, 1956).
