About the Item
Julia Florence’s Sea of Slumbers (2021) is a serene and sensuous work that captures the quiet intimacy of rest. Handcrafted in stoneware and finished with glaze and underglaze, this vessel features a reclining female figure whose soft, rounded form is seamlessly woven into undulating waves. Her eyes are closed, her arms raised gently behind her head, and her face is framed by a cascade of stylised black hair—suggesting both a literal immersion in water and a symbolic plunge into the subconscious.
The figure’s skin, rendered in a soft cream glaze, stands in delicate contrast to the dark navy blue of the surrounding sea, creating a harmonious balance between body and environment. Thin, flowing black lines define the form with clarity and grace, while touches of rosy red on the cheeks and nipples introduce a warm, emotive energy to the composition. The stylisation of the figure is reminiscent of classical Japanese woodcuts, yet entirely contemporary in mood and execution.
There is a stillness to Sea of Slumbers that invites contemplation. The vessel’s curving surface enhances the fluidity of the design, echoing the gentle motion of water and the inward drift of sleep. As with much of Florence’s work, the piece offers more than aesthetic pleasure—it evokes a state of emotional suspension, a surrender to softness and vulnerability.
