About the Item
This is part of a new collection work that encompasses ceramics and textiles by Ak Jansen. Born in the Netherlands, Jansen’s work occupies queerness on both poetic and political terms, and honors queer community’s ethic of creative self-making. The work is about care and intimate relation; how they manifest, are compelled and sustained. The work is about the nature of bodies - in relation to each other but also to themselves; shifting, in flux, and at times against their own will - transforming. Clay, fiber, needle and thread - Jansen’s works are invested with the history of human hands that meet human needs.
Ak Jansen was born in Dongen, The Netherlands, in 1988. He studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven focusing on textile design, material culture, and techniques of fabrication. He works primarily with textile and clay, making art objects that explore different body shapes and hint at organic life - vessels as creatures, quilts that seem to be growing hair. Inspired by Bauhaus design as much as botany, and invested in the manifestations of queer identity, Ak’s work creates its own living world at the intersection of different art forms and creative practices. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

- Côme Clérino Contemporary Artwork Wall Piece "Fenetre One", 2019By Côme ClérinoLocated in Barcelona, ESCôme Clérino Artwork "Fenetre one" Manufactured by Côme Clérino Paris, 2019 MDF, plywood, polyester plaster, acrylic resin, fiberglass, roughcast, fabric, parafin, spackling paste, thermoplastic glue, white clay, enamel and polyester resin Contemporary design Measurements: 120 cm x 120 cm x 5 cm 47.25 in x 47.25 in x 2 in Essay The city is Côme Clérino’s primary inspiration, as well as resource. He extracts raw materials from construction sites, such as concrete, plaster, resin and fiberglass, and mixes them with ceramic, enamel, paraffin, felt pen, and colored pencils. Following his creative bulimia and taming mediums with a rare sensitivity, Clérino invents new lexicons with each material discovery, with each new technical experiment, and breaks down the boundaries between the arts. Because although paint is hardly present in his creations, Clérino considers himself foremost a painter. “My job is to paint by starting with an anchor in the real, and from there to offer a different look on what surrounds us every day”, he says. Made of a thousand materials, colors, textures and techniques, Clérino’s paintings bulge out of the walls, drip from them and sometimes become stand alone pieces. His artworks, borrowing the material language of our cities, of our interiors, tell familiar and intimate stories, peculiar to ones memories and experiences. Bio Côme Clérino (1990, Paris) lives in Paris and works in Pantin, France. After graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2016, he developed a multidisciplinary practice shaking up the academic definition of painting and integrating photography, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, textiles and installation. In 2017, he presented his first solo exhibition, Voir au verso, at Les Gens Heureux gallery in Copenhagen. In 2018, after a new solo exhibition, Emulsilfy(ing), at the Castellana 22 gallery in Madrid, he was nominated for the International Painting Prize of Vitry-sur-Seine. In 2019, he presented his first solo show in France, Et si on passait les meubles par la fenêtre?, at the Double V Gallery...Category

- Stan Bitters Signed Large Mid-Century Modern Ceramic Pottery Haniwa SculptureBy Stan BittersLocated in Studio City, CAA wonderful, unique, beautifully glazed, quite rare, and special double-faced "Haniwa" pottery sculpture by American California studio pottery master ceramists Stan Bitters whose work was instrumental in shaping the organic modernist movement in the 1960s. Bitters received his Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1958. He also studied under Peter Voulkos at Otis College. After graduating, he worked for Hans Sumpf as the company's resident artist. During this time he created architectural murals, tiles, bird houses, planters, and sculptural objects – designs that would earn him recognition later on as a pioneer of the organic modernist craft movement - many still some of the most iconic designs today. Stan Bitters' work was featured as a part of the prestigious California Design series of exhibitions and annuals that chronicled art and design in California from 1954-1976. His works were also featured as part of a group show entitled Golden State of Craft 1960-1985 at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, CA. This show was part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, an unprecedented collaboration of more than 60 museums and other cultural institutions in Southern California, celebrating the birth of the Los Angeles art scene. Bitters' work was also exhibited at Heath Ceramics' Boiler Room...Category

- "ALTAR", sculpture, clay, ceramic, abstract, contemporary, tribal, pattern, markBy Harold WortsmanLocated in Toronto, OntarioAltar, a ceramic sculpture of high-fired clay pigmented with oxides, is a work by New York artist Harold Wortsman. Altar was recently exhibited at "Harold Wortsman: Time and Space" at the Orange Art Foundation, February-March 2022, New York City. Note the blending of geometric and organic forms in this work – it is characteristic of his practice – warm, contemporary, uniquely crafted, yet speaks to ancient, primitive traditions of art-making that cross cultures and histories. Highly attuned to the art of Africa, the Middle East, India and Asia, his forms are organic abstracts with masculine and feminine attributes that resonate together as a pleasing enigma. They make sense immediately, yet never give up all their secrets. From Harold Wortsman – "With sculpture, my material of choice is high-fired clay. Pieces are first low-fired in an electric kiln. I do not use glazes. Instead, I use oxides applied to the bisqued (low-fired) clay. As with a tattoo, oxides permit the surface underneath to breathe. The work is then high-fired in a gas kiln with double reduction to cone 10. The final temperature is 2,300 degrees F. At a certain point, oxygen intake is reduced to the kiln. Because the fire has reached a critical mass, it needs oxygen and chemically takes it from the clay and the oxides. Like a jazz improvisation, each kiln load comes out slightly different." From Jonathan Goodman, Poet & Art Critic – "Wortsman re-examines ancient and modern traditions in light of what it means to make art." – Tussle Magazine, July 2019. Harold Wortsman is a sculptor and printmaker based in Brooklyn, NY. He “creates forms that bring to mind archaic cult objects and exude a quiet concentrated strength.” (Argauer Zeitung, Switzerland). His work, an edgy mix of freedom and clarity, can be found in public and private collections in the US, including The Library of Congress, Yale University, The New York Public Library Print Collection, The New York Historical Society, Smith College, Indiana University’s Lilly Library, Brandeis University, The Newark Public Library Special Collections Division, and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum Print Archive. Also in private and public collections in Europe, including the Municipal Collection of the City of Brugg, Switzerland. Harold studied at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture, with sculptor George Spaventa...Category
