As Seen at Art on Paper Art Fair 2024 at The Mannix Project East Hampton NY
Box of BANNED (Books) contains 100 banned books. On the front of each piece is the book cover. On the flip-side is the reason the book is banned/challenged.
Each (cigar) box contains:
100 Banned Books (same in all three boxes)
5 Bonus Banned Books (each box has a different set of 5)
White Cotton Gloves
Removeable framed Art (the top of the box) which is velcroed on.
There are three BOXES in the series. #2 & #3 remain.
About Karyn Mannix, born in New York, has been in most aspects of the art business. First as a fashion and costume designer, studying at Fashion Institute of Technology. By the age of 21, her clothing line had been seen in feature films, Vogue Magazine, cover of WWD, Cyndi Lauper’s HBO Tour, Michael Mann’s “Crime Stories” TV Series, Patricia Field, and was displayed alongside Donna Karan at Bloomingdales, NYC.
She freelanced various jobs as a fashion illustrator for WWD and French Connection; window installation for Bergdorf Goodman, Diane Von Furstenberg & Barneys NY; plus, set and prop design for numerous theater troupes.
Moving to East Hampton (NY), she earned a second degree in Post Modern Art Theory and Criticism which led to stints as curator, critic, columnist, gallerist, educator, and eventually opening her own art school.
Previously owning four brick and mortar galleries, Karyn has simplified and settled into a career as a private art dealer, representing artists from around the globe. Through all of this, Karyn has never stopped creating her own art and has added playing the electric bass to her repertoire and is writing a novel about the art world.
Artist Statement
Art as the written word is the direct form of what lies between reflection and expression.
Using text allows me to create works that are interactive and as thought-provoking as possible. My work is an examination of the different sides of my personality and the thinking that lies behind it.
In this series, I am using books since they are familiar objects that will pull viewers in for closer observation. Adding my thoughts in text is a way of questioning the attitudes, inner dialog, and unwritten rules, which we have found ourselves with our current situation and environment, and our behavior within it.
My comments on the books are done with a snarky sense of humor and an added dose of reality. They are meant to create a dialog between the viewer and the art.

Karyn Mannix was born in New York and resides as a year-round resident of East Hampton, Long Island. She has degrees in both Fashion Design and Construction and PostModern Art Theory and Criticism. Mannix specializes in cutting edge minimalism to color-field and pop art, with a recent focus on urban street art. She has exhibited widely throughout the United States successfully.
