Keith Thomson
City Kid, Original Painting

2025

About the Item

Artist Comments
Artist Keith Thompson references Charles Darwin in this piece, stating, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” This painting embodies the spirit of adaptation—a child in a rigid, urban environment finds freedom and joy by flying a kite. The contrast between the structured city and the open sky reflects how resilience and creativity allow individuals to thrive, even in challenging or unexpected circumstances.

About the Artist
Alabama-based artist Keith Thomson creates quick-witted, mixed-media artwork that blends realism and surrealism. His background as a political cartoonist in the 90s is reflected in the sharp storytelling his artwork achieves. He combines stylized realism and everyday subject matter with surreal details and ironic twists. He begins his work as digital sketches using animation software, then he transfers the sketch onto the canvas and begins applying oil paint. In addition to painting, he is a writer, of mostly spy novels and nonfiction articles. His writing prowess shines through in his witty descriptions of his pieces.

Artist Comments
Four playful penguins wobble and walk up and down seaside rocks. Utilizing hand-cut papers, artist Rick "Marlowe" Schneider portrays the playful birds with fun and intriguing expressions. The dimensional piece pops with vibrant colors and eye-catching hues of aqua, yellow and blue.

About the Artist
Artist Rick "Marlowe" Schneider creates mixed-media collages, combining the use of handmade paper with a raised dimensional technique. "This process produces distinct shadows which make the imagery jump off the canvas," says Rick. His work is a contemporary nod to 1930s and 1940s graphic design. By bringing together bold color combinations and patterns with quirky typefaces, Rick's work embodies the fun and elegant movie posters of Hollywood's Golden Age. Inspiration for his narratives comes from his father who was a pulp fiction writer. His loft studio in Leland, North Carolina, houses his archive of pulp magazines and stories from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. "My workspace is cluttered with canvases and handmade paper that I have imported from Thailand. It may be impossible to walk around but the atmosphere is perfect for creating."

His Majesty, Original Painting
By Miranda Gamel
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
"This piece depicts the endless world of color and inspiration, created by the force within us all," says artist Miranda Gamel. A pop art-style portrait of a roaring tiger with a glowing pink crown. Surrounded by fluid swirls of color and drips of paint. "Loud, vibrant, alive. The love for life will melt into the air and fill your lungs."

About the Artist
The daughter of two artists, Miranda Gamel grew up with artistic aspirations. “When I was young, I couldn’t imagine that I would be anything else… it only seemed natural,” she says. She further developed her skills with her teachers (and fellow UGallery artists) John and Elli Milan. Miranda’s paintings exist on the edge of the surreal and the fantastical while remaining grounded in human emotion. Each painting, through its dynamic imagery, conveys the spirit embodied by the composition’s subject. Miranda’s ultimate goal is to portray each individual “being their true, raw, authentic self.”

Peanut, Original Painting
By Diane Flick
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
"A true gift sparks joy in my heart and a craving for jelly," says Diane Flick of this playful scene. Her latest series of ink and watercolor drawings adds more characters to her invented universe where robots befriend animals and devour delicious treats. These diminutive drawings work well on their own, or tell a great story in groups of three or five.

About the Artist
Diane Flick is a Bay Area artist who paints quirky portraits of robots with a playful color palette and masterful realism. Each of Diane’s robots expresses its own humanlike and idiosyncratic personality. From an early age, she had a fascination with inanimate objects and often imagined what they would be like with human characteristics. Her portfolio explores the human experience through non-human subjects.
