KEN APTEKAR (b.1950)
Pansy "Joker Viola-Gold", 1990
sandblasted glass, bolts, colored ink on paper
20 x 20 in.
Ken Aptekar is an artist who combines painting with text. He paints new versions of historical paintings and frames, bolting glass with sandblasted words to his painted panels. Aptekar’s work belongs to the tradition of painting, yet he brings to that tradition a recognition that paintings produce meaning only through their interaction with viewers. He investigates the nature of spectatorship. By “recreating” works of art in a painterly but utilitarian manner, Aptekar promotes viewers’ own narratives prompted by the image-text combinations.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1950, Aptekar received his BFA at the University of Michigan, then moved to Brooklyn in 1973 to complete an MFA at Pratt Institute (1975). From February 7 through May 29, 2016, a commissioned solo exhibition, NACHBARN (“NEIGHBORS”), is on view at the St.-Annen Museum in Lübeck, Germany. Previously, his work has been seen in solo exhibitions at the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), Memorial Art Gallery (Rochester, NY), Centro da Cultura Judaica (Sao Paolo, Brazil), Musée Robert Dubois-Corneau (Brunoy, France), Espace d’Art Contemporain Camille Lambert (Juvisy, France), The New Museum (NY), Douglas Cooley Gallery at Reed College in Portland, OR, Palmer Museum at Penn State, Cummer Museum (Jacksonville, FL), the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, and the Elaine Jacob Gallery at Wayne State University in Detroit. In 2012 Aptekar’s work was the subject of a survey exhibition, “Ken Aptekar: Look Again,” at the Beard and Weil Galleries, Wheaton College, Massachusetts.

Born in Paris in 1946 and raised in the heart of an idyllic French countryside near the Loire Valley, Jacques Lamy began painting at a very early age. Jacques completed his formal artistic training at the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieur des Arts Decoratifs (Paris) in 1971. While there, he received the highest peer recognition in European Arts; the coveted Prix de Rome award for painting.
Jacques Lamy’s career as an artist, designer and art teacher took him from his native France to life abroad in Spain, Africa, and the United States. His broad artistic interests and his classic training in art and design have enabled him to enjoy a wide variety of artistic experiences from designing furniture, lamps, tapestries, and elegant garden statuary to creating large scale murals for public viewing and enjoyment.
in addition to his renowned mural work, Jacques received international recognition for his decorative fresco paintings.
Jacques personal artistic style is very much a melding of old and new – a merging of a classically trained artist with a modern artistic vision. The medium is multi-media and the composition has a modern, abstract quality but the Old World training in design and composition lends the whole an air of classical grace. Examples can be seen in his studio-gallery in Dallas, Texas.

Born in Washington, D.C. in 1940. Raised in Washington, D.C. and newly graduated from high school, he flew to Europe living off and on in Paris and London. During this time, he designed costumes for Jimi Hendrix, worked as a graphic designer for the Beatles as well as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Returning to New York, he dedicated his life to art after a surprise success with his first show in 1971 at the Willard Gallery in NYC. Ed's images are Zen-like in their simplicity and grace rendered in a flat, graphic style that recalls Japanese Ukiyo-e prints. His watercolors are luminous, like the rest of his representations regardless of the medium. The Japanese inspired ukiyo-e style woodblock prints and lithograph works he created at Tyler Graphics in 1980 contain a 20th century "floating world" sensibility. Ed's wish was to bring harmony, color, and a meditative stillness to this chaotic planet. He did so in a gentle and powerful way, always as an expression of his deep gratitude for the love and beauty, friendship, and concerns he held dearest. His first solo exhibition was in 1971 at New York's legendary Willard Gallery on the recommendation of Agnes Martin. Baynard went on to have exhibitions at galleries including Betty Parsons Gallery, New York (1973); Marian Goodman Gallery, New York (1977); John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco (1980); and Barbara Gladstone Gallery, New York (1980/81).. Baynard manages to retain a simplicity of form inspired by a love of Japanese Woodblock prints. His new works reflect the same poetry of his earlier paintings, retaining his stylized compositions with their Zen like minimalism and Oriental calm, along with a new sense of rhythm and movement. Baynard uses familiar themes such as flowers, plants, pots, and vases, incorporating them into his delicate watercolor still lifes, thus creating stunning visual feasts. He was included in the 1972 Landscape exhibition at MoMA NY alone with other luminaries James Boynton...
