Voices of Silence #12
Located in New York, NY
Francisca Sutil is a Chilean painter known for her research of the chromatic surface, the nature of the support and the study of textures and materials that she prepares herself. Born in Santiago de Chile in 1952, she moved to New York where she received an M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in 1981. Since 1992, Sutil has lived and worked in Santiago. Sutil’s work is characterized by its superb construction and unique contemplative qualities. When approaching her paintings, the viewer is immediately captivated by the textures and hues. She proposes a rigorous exercise of painting on support, regardless of its material composition, in search of pictorial depth. It is a mental process from which a neat and pure chromatic production emerges. Intending no specific content in her paintings, she instead asks viewers to respond openly and honestly to her abstractions. She uses her work to provoke emotions and sensations, and in turn, encourages reflection, meditation and lasting thoughts and memories...

“The Continual Condition”- Vibrant, Mixed Media, Abstract Fine Art Painting
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Imani Bilal is a contemporary abstract painter and poet based in Jersey City, New Jersey. Her work is deeply inspired by the many states of the human condition and is rooted in her spiritual (Islamic) practices. As she explains, “I strive to convey the notion of Tawheed (oneness), the idea of primordial matter, chaos, and calm; of all things sharing a source and being connected to an infinite mound, inclusive of the human experience.” Her language is versatile and her approach, unconventional, working with acrylic, ink, and resin to articulate emotion and promote connectivity through color and movement. Bilal, who has been experimenting with paint since childhood, has developed a unique process of her own. She often paints while seated on the floor to pour her whole body into the composition, using her hands, mouth, and found objects to create an array of effects that become part of an intricate yet fluid work of art. Bilal’s first solo show in New York City, Fingerprints of Ruh (2020), curated by Nemo Librizzi, was met with enthusiasm and led to gallery representation by Chase Contemporary Gallery and recently, Mazlish Gallery...

Gold & Despair
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Gold & Despair is my adaptation of Gustav Klimt’s masterpiece "The Woman In Gold", also known as The Mona Lisa of Austria. Having admired the symbolic art of Klimt since my working days as a fine art restorer at Vienna’s prestigious Conservation Institute (Bundesdenkmalamt) in the 1980’s, I conceived the idea to recreate the jewel of his gilded period with an interpretive lens on the looming darkness of the Holocaust and World War II. As a native of Austria, Salzburg, I have developed an appreciation for Klimt’s art, and Art Nouveau in general. For the last thirty years, I have lived in New York City and worked as a fine art restorer, conservator, and painter as well as in the healing arts. Klimt had executed The Woman in Gold in the span of four years (1903-1907). My own creative process during 2014-2017, reflects my diligent care and thoroughness in rendering the original painting. In 2014, I started with the preparation of the canvas using Klimt’s original size of 54 x 54 inches (167 x 167 cm). For gesso, I used the traditional method of rabbit skin glue and chalk. For the painting, I used oil paints and genuine 23.5 karat gold in various shades, as well as silver leaves, to magnify the brilliant sheen of Klimt’s gold...

Modernist Judaica "Les Valises" French Jewish Modernist Mixed media Oil Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Painting measures 28 X 36 inches. There is a sulpture quality to the suitcase, it has texture to the piece. It subtly recalls the european Holocaust, travel and displacement. Provenance: Ginsburg collection; purchased from Galerie Art Temoin, Paris, France. Alain Kleinmann was born in Paris, France 1953. Known for his Paintings, sculptures and etchings. His very particular style uses collage, incrustations and cast bas relief. His mastery of glazing and varnishing techniques dominated by sepia colours have guaranteed him resounding success. Alain Kleinmann has already proven himself one of the most interesting European artists of his generation. He has carefully forged his own language of signs, a unique visual vocabulary in which Rembrandt and the artists of the European past fuse with the innovations of the post-war masters such as Francis Bacon, Larry Rivers and Robert Rauschenberg. His works have been exhibited at numerous international galleries and museums. He has received almost a dozen medals and is a member of eight different salons. In recent years, Kleinmann has assimilated the sepia-based tones of Rembrandt's paintings – archetypes within the European tradition of the quest for a soul in a surface of paint – to his own complex operations, creating a series of paintings he calls "Fragments of Memory." Whereas in his photo-realist close-ups all was revealed – his works treat questions of time and memory, of lives unknown in their intensity but alluded to by traces, gestures and fragments of images or words, all perceived like outdated documents through the patina of age. Kleinmann transcends the limits of static imagery in a picture frame by digging within the life of the materials at hand – notably paper, the prime purveyor of identity in the Information Age. Paper, after all, takes on a life of its own as it goes through time: the process of its deterioration. It starts out neutral and pristine and gains character as it vanishes. His background in semiotics stands Kleinmann in good stead as he manipulates a variety of visual languages: photos, drawings, rubber stamps, tickets, numbers, handwritten phrases or letters, pages from prayerbooks, personal correspondence and official documents. His textures come from materials that have lived and suffered, that have already received the imprint of human intervention: cardboard with its facing torn off, revealing its inner ribs and backing; paper that has been rumpled and then flattened again; paper with its skin scraped raw or mechanically imprinted with a meaningless pattern; paper that has buckled or wrinkled in the process of being adhered to another surface; and finally, photographs, hidden behind gauze or paraffin, recessed, partly revealed; they recede in time as they are obscured from view, as if their precision had been swallowed in the half-life of generational memory. All of these elements, so diverse and individualized, are harmonized in the final composition by the artist's hand. For him, there is no spirituality without specific individuals who cultivate their inner life. As he says, "The dimension of things is right here. For me, true spirituality comes in the act of embracing true materiality, and not by averting one's gaze." Museum of Contemporary art, Santiago de Chile, Chile Mid century modern Jewish art...

"Passion, " Acrylic Paint, Wood Elements, Icepick and Painted Plaster Heart
Located in Houston, TX
This three-dimensional work incorporates an acrylic painting on canvas laid in a handmade red frame, adorned with scorched wooden planks, a stylized plaster heart, and an ice pick. The painting is a monochromatic depiction of icebergs protruding from the surface of water. While the imagery of the painting speaks to the visible outcome of artistic production, the frame and its adornments implore the viewer to consider the requisite materials necessary for creative actualization. Bert L. Long Jr., was self-taught artist, was born in 1940 in Texas, grew up the Houston’s historic Fifth Ward and received his formal education from UCLA. Following a career as a successful master chef, Long decided to devote himself entirely to art in the late 1970’s. He began to explore folk art and assemblage to create a unique body of work, attracting the attention of Jim Harithas, then Director of the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and artists John Alexander, Salvatore Scarpitta and James Surls. His life spanned an era of radical change in the American social climate, the influence of which can be seen clearly in his work. Long’s paintings and sculptures incorporate a high level of skill and sophisticated knowledge of art history, along with complex philosophical and social issues.  Long describes the philosophy behind his work as "a quest to help people diagnose their inner self," believing his art to be "the vehicle to help facilitate the process." “As artists we have the obligation to provide the world with art which communicates as truth. I believe that art has the power to heal our souls of their afflictions. I try to create art which helps to diagnose the prevalent conditions within our societies, hopefully providing an insightfulness which will help us all become brothers and sisters united in equality and compassion”                                       - Bert L. Long, Jr. The late Peter Marzio, former Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, said of Bert Long during the major retrospective of Long’s work at the museum: “Bert Long does not avert his gaze from that which is painful, but as [his artworks] testify, he also brings a spirit of joy and redemption to his art. We can all learn from this great artist.” Over Long’s 33-year career as a painter, sculptor, and photographer, he had several solo exhibitions at respected museums and was awarded many significant awards including the National Endowment for the Arts Grant in 1987 and the prestigious international Prix de Rome fellowship in 1990. Mathieu Matégot - Sans titre, tapestry, french, modern, abstract, wool, design
Located in London, GB
Mathieu Matégot (1910-2001) Sans titre c.1950s wool tapestry, Manufactura de Tapeçarias de Portalegre 150 x 70 cm signed ‘Matégot’ and with the Manufactura de Tapeçarias de Portalegre monogram (lower right) Price: $11,000 USD Provenance: Barry Friedman Ltd, New York (stock no. BF21324) Notes: Mathieu Matégot was a Hungarian-born French designer, architect and artist. After studying at Budapest's School of Fine Arts in 1929, Matégot travelled across Italy and the USA until settling in Paris in 1931 where he worked as a set designer, window dresser and tapestry maker. Matégot volunteered for the French resistance at the start of the Second World War, only to be captured by the Nazis. A dreadful fate for most, however, it was during his time as a prisoner of war that the artist discovered metalworking techniques (such as Rigitulle) which he later patented and became renowned for. Upon his release, Matégot was awarded French citizenship. After the war, the artist's interest in tapestry was renewed after being introduced to contemporary tapestry revivalist, Jean Lurçat. However, in order to make ends meet, Matégot pursued furniture design; he established a workshop in Paris and dedicated his time to translating the groundbreaking metal techniques into popular handcrafted objects. In 1959, Matégot abandoned furniture design and focused exclusively on his passion for abstract tapestries. He continued his work as a pioneer of French Modern tapestry...
