Unique Mid-Century Original Mixed Media Newsprint and Crayon. Hat and Flowers.

About the Item

Unique Mid-century original mixed-media newsprint and crayon collage/drawing by French artist Max Papart, signed with dedication and dated 1967 to the bottom right. The work is on the 1966 Christmas catalogue for the 13th Salon in the town of Bollène in the Vaucluse. This collage was created by Max Papart for and given to Denise David a well-known and well respected gallerist from Lyon. Provenance: Gift of the artist to Denise David, thence by descent within the family. Max Papart was a French painter and printmaker. He is best known for his depictions of circus performers, birds, figures, still lifes, and landscapes in a colourful Cubist style. Papart’s work captured the joy of life through a sense of movement, cheerful hues, and lighthearted subject matter. Born on December 19, 1911 in Marseilles, France, the artist studied at the School of Fine Arts in Marseilles before moving to Paris in 1936, where he began exhibiting at the Salon des Indepedants. In the years 1969–1973, he taught printmaking at the University of Paris VIII in Vincennes. The artist died on August 29, 1994 in Paris, France. Today, Papart’s works are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the National Gallery in London, among others. A wide array of artists had an influence on Papart's work, such as Cranach, Delacroix, Matisse, and Klee and inspired by his friend Jacques Prevert. Max Papart could never imagine that his images would create such thought and enjoyment. His subjects include the legendary landscapes of the South of France as well as thought provoking collaged portraits. Often working in the realm of cubism, he depicted circus scenes, flirting couples, soaring birds, and other cheerful subjects with flat, overlapping planes of contrasting colours and textures which suggest many levels of depth. He often achieved what has been called a "time window" effect, through which the viewer senses the past or future. This is not to say that Papart is simply a purveyor of superficial entertainment. For all its decorative gaiety, his work also forces the viewer to think. As the noted critic André Parinaud put it, "We are going to rediscover Papart as one of the masters of the second cubist generation, born from colour and from the geometric demand of the composition...His radiating warmth will be much appreciated." Papart's work is widely recognized by critics and connoisseurs alike. Since his first one-man show in 1946, he had over 300 museum and gallery exhibitions around the globe, and is the subject of dozens of books and catalogues.

  • Mermet. Mid-Century Design for a Sculpture.
    Located in Cotignac, FR
A mid-century design for a sculpture, signed or titled Mermet bottom left corner. Presented in period metal frame. A very strong image which is almost certainly a design for a sculpture due to the three dimensional nature of the piece accentuated by the lines of the image extending beyond the subject itself showing the different planes to be worked. This extremely energetic and forceful application of the crayon and the extension of the lines is highly reminiscent of the work of the expressionist Bernard Buffet who lived and worked in Tourtour in the South of France. The angular features of the figure and the dark intense lines are particularly in line with the style of his work. Expressionism was a form of art less interested in the correct anatomical representation of the subject but more in portraying the feelings and emotions that the subject evoked. The model appears to be for a sculpture quite possibly inspired by African art as the image is reminiscent of African fetish...

French, Mid Century, pastel and crayon portrait of an elegant young lady by Gourdon. Signed and dated bottom left. Trade label to the back board. Presented in period deep 'tray' frame.
