His ongoing series of large-scale kites bridge the gap between flat art and sculpture, each crafted of split bamboo frames covered with stretched canvas and a collage of vintage ephemera – including kimonos, obis, paintings, scrolls, drawings or anything with a story to tell.
Balanced and serene, this kite entitled "Shibori Sky" evokes imagery of warm weather and sandy beaches within a patchwork of Japanese obi silks and sheer, gauzy fabrics hand-dyed in the manner of Japanese shibori. Tie-resist circles pattern the indigo cloth in star formations, streaking like the haloed light of the sun shimmering in a blue, summer sky. Creases and imperfections in the tie-dyed silk further the summery feel, texturing the blue-green color like ripples on the water's surface.
