About the Item

About the work Where can the wreckage of this memory be rediscovered? In flea markets, where tourists and foreigners love these sculpted, displaced, decontextualised objects, left to fragment in a mortuary fashion, where you have to imagine the missing pieces in order to reconstitute the primordial image. In this way, the artist becomes a travelling archaeologist. His body is the privileged site of the excavations. The outside world offers him the visible traces that guide his quest. His memorycontextualises the objects. The arches (hammals), masterpieces of the tent's architecture, can stand on their own as works of art in their own right. Simple or sculpted supports for the khayma, of medium or monumental form, their imposing shape and the presence or absence of ornamentation indicate the quality of the tent and the wealth or poverty of the nomads (or semi-nomads). Tarafa Ibnu al-Abd, the famous pre Islamic poet, alluded to this in his famous mu'allaqa. In their new, colourful and architectural life, the arches lend themselves to suspension, hanging and display on the ground. They stand there like the migratory signs of a transhumance, where the only reference points are the open mobility of the sky and the earth. They allow themselves to be staged in a perspectivist way, where the aura of what they refer to unfolds tirelessly in the imagination of our gaze. Traces of an indelible memory, they are the supports of a sky conducive to relaxation, storytelling and sensuality. This inescapable dimension (remember how the story of Musaylimale, a false prophet, and Zarqa' al Yamama, also a false prophetess, ends in a tent majestically prepared for this union!), is corroborated by the festivity of the colours, which seem to become the alphabet of a story unfolding before our eyes...
