About the Item

Monica DeSalvo’s “A Bus Tour in the Woods—Stage 6” is a 36 x 24 inch surreal collage on a digital enlargement of two acrylic monotypes printed onto archival foamcore. Magenta, violet, green, and creamy yellow organic, botanical forms with impressions of leaves contrast with lists of numbers and vintage document rules. The original images were printed with a Gelli plate onto DeSalvo’s late father’s paper memorabilia—here a typewritten report from his engineering profession and handwritten numbers on ledger sheets. Collage elements include fragments of this paper memorabilia which DeSalvo has printed onto and regularly incorporates into her work. DeSalvo’s “A Bus Tour in the Woods” series was inspired by foliage along a footpath on the island of Skopelos in Greece and an enchanting hallucination that DeSalvo’s father recounted during his decline and memory loss. The signature and title are written below the image, and the thickness of the foamcore is 0.1875 inches. Monica DeSalvo is a Boston-based mixed-media artist and designer with a BFA in Visual Design from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Her work has been featured in juried and invitational exhibitions, as well as in several periodicals, and is part of collections in the United States and Europe. DeSalvo is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston.
