About the Item

This sculptural painting is part of Natasha Lelenco's Currency Exchange series, showcasing a profile portrait on a wooden tondo. The piece features intense fluorescent pink tones, framing a character surrounded by the Romanian phrase "Strain în lume, strain printre straini," which translates to "A stranger in the world, a stranger among strangers." Conceptually, the artwork reflects the artist's personal experience and examines the theme of foreignness, exploring the feeling of "not belonging." It also resonates with the experiences of individuals navigating the challenges of migration. The Currencies series by Natasha Lelenco is designed for versatile display, working either as a standalone contemporary artwork or as part of a modular art installation, allowing collectors to create custom panel compositions that adapt to any space. Each piece is a unique hand-painted wood artwork, reflecting themes of migration, identity, and value. We offer special pricing for multiple acquisitions, and the artist also accepts custom commissions related to this series. For more details, feel free to contact the seller by clicking the "Ask the Seller" button—we respond in less than an hour! These pieces are designed to function as standalone artworks or in versatile compositions, enabling installations of varying sizes tailored to any space. For inquiries about purchasing multiple pieces, custom offers, or additional stock options, please feel free to contact us. The artist also accepts commissions to create bespoke panels according to client preferences. Natasha Lelenco, a Moldovan-born artist, delves into the notion of foreignness and investigates the concept of value within her Currency Exchange series. While traditional coins hold fixed values and typically depict national figures, Natasha’s “coins” portray anonymous faces with variable, often intentionally arbitrary, values. This allows collectors to reimagine their function both as individual pieces and as part of broader panels. As a unique aspect of this series, collectors have the opportunity to exchange the artist’s commission percentage from the sale of these works for future pieces created by Natasha. This means that acquiring one of these artworks also provides a unique chance to visit her studio and explore additional works, using the acquired piece as a form of exchange. Natasha describes this series as follows: "This series is a reflection on value and price. I propose to the public the acquisition of a currency that holds a transfer value exclusively valid for future works of my authorship. This value, detached from the price of the currency itself, is deliberately arbitrary and highlights the fluidity of artistic worth. These works are crafted with intentional technical imperfections, each signed as a certification of originality. Unlike conventional coins that feature figures representing national identity, these coins showcase anonymous profiles paired with enigmatic phrases, reflecting a global community of individuals who exist in a perpetual state of 'not belonging.' This concept addresses themes of displacement, origin, and inequality, questioning the constructs that define value and identity." Each piece is an original, thoughtfully crafted with unique artistic intent, offering collectors both an individual artwork and a gateway to engage further with the artist's evolving narrative.
