Natasha Lelenco
Contemporary Figurative Portrait on Wood “Currency #255”, Migration and Identity

2025

About the Item

Currency #255 is part of Natasha Lelenco’s ongoing Currencies series, a conceptual portrait project exploring identity, migration, and symbolic value. Painted in acrylic on a handcrafted circular pine wood panel, the piece presents a female profile in side view, emerging from a dark, velvety background. The chromatic contrast between the cool black-green tones and the subtle touches of red and phosphorescent green on the skin suggests a visual threshold—between presence and erasure, origin and transformation. Encircling the figure is the hand-painted phrase: “Me había vuelto diferente y necesitaba a mi alrededor un mundo diferente” (“I had returned different and needed a different world around me”) This quote, sourced from a personal testimony collected by the artist, encapsulates the affective shifts caused by displacement and reintegration. It reflects the emotional layers that shape post-migration identities: not just leaving a place, but returning altered and encountering the mismatch with the world that remained unchanged. As with all works in the Currencies series, the round format echoes that of a coin—used here as a visual and conceptual metaphor. Each piece functions on multiple levels: As a symbolic portrait: The repetition of anonymous profiles replaces numismatic iconography with the contemporary face of migration. As a conceptual object: The arbitrary price assigned to each piece exposes the economic inequalities tied to origin and class. As a system of exchange: These artworks operate as a speculative currency—collectors may exchange them in the future for other available works by Lelenco, rethinking value not as static, but relational and time-based. This piece can be exhibited individually or composed into a modular wall installation, adapting to both conceptual curations and intimate interiors. Its scale (26 cm diameter) and sculptural finish make it suitable for both residential and institutional display. About the Series: Currencies is part of Lelenco’s broader documentary project LSYTSDA / Lo siento, yo tampoco soy de aquí ("I’m sorry, I’m not from here either"), which collects testimonies from migrants to construct a living archive of voices. The project draws from sociological and psychological frameworks—such as Ulysses Syndrome, identified by psychiatrist Joseba Achotegui—connecting personal grief and cultural dislocation to systemic inequality. About the Gallery: Casa das Peritas is an independent contemporary art gallery based on the Atlantic coast of Galicia, Spain. Combining curatorial precision with close artist collaboration, we work with collectors worldwide, maintaining the same care and attention that define our local presence. All works include certificates of authenticity, and our shipping process ensures secure and personalized delivery. Feel free to follow our storefront to explore more pieces and future releases.
