About the Item

This work by Reinhoud d'Haese is a magnificent hammered copper figure on a natural stone base. This mythical creature, large and corpulent, invites a caress of its warm browned body as it appears to be listening to words, sounds or music from a dimension we cannot enter. An exquisite welded Surrealist piece that is unique and one-of-a-kind.
Reinhoud d’Haese was born in Grammont, Belgium. Initially, he studied to become a goldsmith, at the École d’Architecture et des Arts Decoratifs in Brussels, but soon abandoned that to study sculpture. Creating surreal works that permitted him, thanks to the help of his friend Pierre Alechinsky who was a lithographer and close friend, to become part of the Avant-Garde Movement, COBRA group with which he exhibited subsequently on numerous occasions. Members of the group were: Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Asger Jorn, and Joseph Noiret.
In 1958 – when the COBRA movement had already been disbanded for some time – he finally decided to continue his research independently. From that moment on, he used varied materials like metals, pewter and glass, producing a large “family” of mysterious and amusing beings, like characters from children’s fairy tales, perfectly in tune with the language of the COBRA group. Generally these figures – small-scale sculptures – were displayed in groups, performing human activities.
Some of the museums in which his works have been exhibited at: the Maison de la Culture in Namur, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Holland, and the PMMK- Museum of Modern Art in Brussels.

Reinhoud d'Haese (1928–2007), known mononymously as Reinhoud, was a Belgian sculptor celebrated for his surrealistic and avant-garde sculptures. Born on October 21, 1928, in Geraardsbergen, Belgium, he initially trained as a goldsmith at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. His artistic journey took a pivotal turn when he joined the CoBrA group in 1949, introduced by Pierre Alechinsky. Reinhoud's oeuvre is distinguished by its grotesque and whimsical figures, often crafted from metals such as copper, lead, and pewter. His creations, reminiscent of the works of Hieronymus Bosch and Brueghel, feature fantastical beings that blur the line between the real and the imaginary. Critics have noted that his work evokes a sense of Halloween-like eeriness. Reinhoud's artistic legacy is further enriched by his familial connections; he was the brother of sculptors Roel and Begga d'Haese. He passed away on July 1, 2007, in Vieux-Moulin, France, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire and challenge the boundaries of surrealist sculpture.
Throughout his career, Reinhoud received several accolades, including the Prize for Young Belgian Sculpture in 1957 and the Eugène Baie Award in 1969. His works have been exhibited internationally, with pieces held in prestigious collections and museums. Notably, his sculptures have been featured in venues such as the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen, Netherlands.

"Draped Figure" Sassafras & Bronze, Figurative Sculpture, 1982
Located in Detroit, MI
"Draped Figure" is a beautiful example of Tazian's ability to meld the smooth texture of wood and the hard texture of bronze into an exquisite object to view, hold or caress. The piece balances perfectly on its stone base and can be easily turned to enjoy from all angles.
Like architects Eliel Saarinan and Albert Kahn and sculptor Corrado Parducci, Tazian is an immigrant creative who has found a home in the city, nurtured by its energy and sheltered by its community.
He developed an early ambition to become an artist, even though he had very little exposure to the arts. ““The only person [who encouraged me] was my 5th grade English teacher, Olivia Balian,” he says. “She really opened the doors of art for me. She said, ‘Those students who are interested in art can stay behind after school and I will show you how to paint and draw.’ Somehow [that] changed my life– she gave me that spark.”
Tazian came to the U.S. to study at St. Francis College in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He earned a bachelor’s degree in art and a Master’s in Art Education, and then earned and MFA in sculpture from Wayne State University in Detroit.
Kegham Tazian is an award-winning sculptor and painter. The Armenian-born artist has gained notoriety for the diversity of his work and the variety of media exemplified in his pieces. A blend of modernism, realism and abstraction are commonly depicted in his paintings and sculptures.
His artwork has been represented in more than 40 solo exhibitions and more than 75 group exhibitions throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East. His work adorns the entrances and halls of major corporations, universities and municipalities, including Siemens Corporation, Huntington Bank, Wayne State University and the city halls of Farmington and Farmington Hills...
