About the Item

'The Pulse Of Spring' Original Artwork _________________ Capturing the pulse and flush of fleeting youth, in the throb of spring the maples are dressed in their iridescent finery. 'The Pulse of Spring' is a contemplation of the balance in all things: in dormancy and virile life; in the enduring and the effervescent; in the sensual interplay of light and shadow. This artwork is a rumination on the awareness of being part of the natural narrative in which all things rise and fall, and of the Japanese term 'Mono no aware'. With no direct translation, it speaks of a knowing acceptance that everything in existence is temporary, of the ephemeral nature of all things. It is an appreciation of the bittersweet impermanence, for that is where the beauty comes from. From a body of work titled 'Elemental', in which Sophia employs her unique method of working using the four elements of nature- earth, air, fire and water. The physical process of creating this painting embodies the tangible moment when the elemental forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: spring sunlight dancing through dappled leaves cast a delicate shadow, and like the morning sun in a spider's web, it becomes a physical presence. "I am rather like Mrs Darling, finding Peter Pan's shadow '...Quite the ordinary kind...' I roll it up and put it away carefully in a drawer". The painting is scratched and scarred, by tactile movements of the breeze, the tumbling stream water: memories intrinsically embedded. A narrative portrait of a moment. The work is characterised by this practice of plein air working, including various marks, dents, or cockling from long periods of being submerged and washed. Mixed media on board, with deep blue tones of cyanotype solution used as a painting medium, together with vibrant colours of richly layered acrylic ink and accents of gold leaf. Signed, dated and titled in pencil to the lower right corner 71.5 x 18 cm / 28.1 x 7 inches * Please note that images of the artwork in situ and framed are an indication of how the piece can look and in the context of other companion pieces. The artwork is being sold unframed. Framing options are available, please contact. Sophia's works have an affinity with the ancient Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi sabi, and with resonating ripples of intuition and instinct, she illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'. Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago. __________________________ Modern .
