Nettie Jane
40" X 43 1/2"
cardboard, latex paint, waxed linen thread
This contemporary pattern-based abstract mixed media work was created by San Francisco-based artist Susan Stover in 2020. Stover stitches patchwork pieces of corrugated cardboard together like a quilt. The surface is sanded, adding texture, and then is painted with acrylic paint mixed with latex. The final work is installed with a wooden bar that is screwed into the wall. The piece then adheres to this bar with velcro, allowing the form to hang freely while spaced about 2 inches away from the wall.
Stover's paintings and sculptures often recall an ethnic sensibility and geometric organization. Her interest lies in the objects made by non-Western cultures and how they are tied to identity, status, religious beliefs, and mythologies. Adapting processes that are traditionally used in the production of textiles, she uses materials and techniques that refer to a collective history with the completed painting and forms revealing themselves in the making.
Pattern and repetition are an integral part of the work as she dyes fabric, melt wax, embed fibers, and construct surfaces. She is intrigued with how repetitive labor, such as stamping, stitching and constructing, can be transformative and meditative. She chooses these methods because it connects her to people in other cultures who work in the same way. Because of these interests, she continually explores her own ties to history, culture, and the arena of contemporary painting and sculpture.
Artist statement:
As I build one body of work on the previous ones, there are certain elements that remain constant forming a link or thread that continues to develop, progress and evolve. Formal issues of line, surface and color intermingle with conceptual ideas of sacred space, solitude, spirituality, the passage of time and of leaving one’s mark. Each piece and series is a personal meditation on what connects the past and the present and the beauty of imperfection. The connection between art and spirituality has always been at the source of my own art making whether as a participant or as an observer. I am interested in how other cultures integrate their beliefs and their art in the objects created and the rituals performed. My intention is to create artwork that evokes this sense of transcendent mystery and purpose and to imbue my work with a vulnerability and vitality that reflect a human condition, emotion or state of mind.
