The City of Books shows a map of an imaginary city made up by words: 140 quotations, taken from 40 different books and chosen following the criterion of analogy, give rise to 12 tales that compose the roads of the city. My Emotional Baggage Carts are vessels to dispose of racial trauma. The act of making, weaves the sting of macro and microaggressions into the cart, freeing me from these constraints. Each recovered shopping cart is unique, but they all are woven with upcycled materials like rope, paracord, grocery bags, rope lights, beads, fabric, and bottle caps. The cart is with a protective zip tie blanket to trap trauma and prevent its escape. “Salon (13)“ is a collection of 13 small-scale works by artist Heather Nicol. The installation of 13 assemblages is variable. The artist will personally consult with the buyer and can be on site for the installation. The 13 mixed media pieces include delicate lighting elements that shift and change via arduino electronic devices, or utilize picture lights throwing a soft roll of light across the artwork. These works are linked through their wiring, which is enveloped in a white umbilical cord-like fabric casing, creating an organic, unifying code of display. Michael Olsen says: My working life has lead me down numerous paths. Retailing medicines through my Pharmacy business in the early years to creating the 1st UK Pet superstore in 1990 and more recently operating a coffee shop, I’ve almost always enjoyed how I’ve earned my living. Having spent the greater part of my 74 years making things simply for pleasure or for practical purposes, more recently I’ve been able to allow my artistic impulses develop. What was a hobby has now become a full time and gratifying venture. I enjoy the simple, beautiful things that life has to offer – family, love, the outdoors (cycling through it), music (better heard through a needle) and time spent happily with others as well as alone – all of which inspire me to try to create things to enhance the enjoyment of life. I’ve always been fascinated by nature and in particular butterflies. To me, there is something captivating about that moment when a butterfly stops to allow an onlooker to admire its form.
