In Wonderland Quilt, Zoa Ace weaves a playful patchwork of surrealism and nostalgia, bringing Lewis Carroll’s iconic characters to life with a vibrant, pop-art flair. Divided into nine bold panels, the collage mimics the form of a traditional quilt—each square a window into the delightfully off-kilter world of Alice in Wonderland. From the Cheshire Cat’s mischievous grin to the White Rabbit’s ever-ticking clock, Ace infuses classic illustrations with unexpected textures, contemporary imagery, and bursts of bright, saturated color.
The checkerboard floor, oversized playing cards, and twisting mushrooms ground the viewer in the familiar absurdity of Wonderland, while rhinestones, collage cutouts, and rich pigments give the piece a tactile, almost animated presence. As Alice appears multiple times across the grid—curious, cautious, and always on the brink of discovery—Wonderland Quilt becomes both homage and reinterpretation. Zoa Ace
Zoa Ace was born in Rockford, Illinois, in the 20th century. She is influenced by Max Beckman (1884–1950), who was a German painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor and writer. Although he is classified as an Expressionist artist, he rejected both the term and the movement. Zoa's images are subconsciously manifested into a juxtaposition of themes and figures in motion.
