About the Item

This piece is a unique, original gouache on paper by Erte, also known as Romain de Tirtoff. Erte was a vastly diverse artist who excelled in an array of fields including fashion, jewelry, graphic arts, costume and set design for film, theatre, opera, and interior decor. Erte designed over 200 covers for the popular magazine, Harper's Bazaar, as well as many others including Illustrated London News, Cosmopolitan, Ladies's Home Journal, and Vogue. It was created in 1958 as a costume design for a cabaret show. It is from the private collection of Hélène Martini, the famed cabaret owner. Martini is best known for her involvement with the Parisian cabarets and owns 10 nightspots and cabarets all over the city like The Folies Bergère, The Folies Pigalle and Rasputin. Erté was such great friends with Martini that he left his entire collection to her after he passed. This piece is hand signed and bears notations from the artist on recto. it also bears the artist and also bears the stamp, title and registration number 15.376 on verso. This piece is unframed and measures 14.5 x 10.6 inches. Condition: Crease in the upper right corner and other minor creases along edges, as received by Helene Martini from the artist.
