Rare and authentic collectible watches, designed by Hairy Who & Chicago Imagist artist Karl Wirsum for Playboy Magazine. Made in 1991, buyer can choose between genuine leather watch band in black or navy. Please make sure to specify band color when purchasing for availability. Karl Wirsum (b. 1939), as part of the Hairy Who group (along with James Falconer, Art Green, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, and Suellen Rocca). This group came to be known by the exhibition title of the same name, which was co-curated by Don Baum at the Hyde Park Art Center in 1966. By the early 1970s, several Hairy Who artists came to be known as Chicago Imagists, (a name for which critic Franz Schulze is credited for having developed) and this "group" expanded to include Ed Paschke, Roger Brown, Christina Ramberg and Barbara Rossi). In 1969 the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago exhibited many Imagists in a show entitled "Don Baum Says 'Chicago Needs Famous Artists'". Wirsum developed a style that combines a graphic sensibility–vivid, flat colors, simplified cartoon-like figures–with a sense of humor evident in the works themselves and also in titles that second guess and play with words. Wirsum’s imaginary creatures and super hero characters enact bizarre scenes. Figures from outer space perform domestic tasks such as mowing the lawn; space men happily orbit starry objects. His work exists in the buffer zone between real and imaginary, surrealist and figurative, mundane domesticity and super hero powers, day-to-day existence and daydreams. Wirsum currently lives in Chicago.
