About the Item

Kent Monkman (b.1965) is a Canadian First Nations artist of Cree ancestry. Over the last 15 years, Monkman has developed an aesthetic that hijacks Canadian colonial images with homoerotic revisionist anarchy... and humour. Today he is known as one of Canada's most internationally acclaimed and notorious multidisciplinary artists. Monkman's trailblazing art has been focused on figuration. He established his distinct and intricate figurative style at a time before representational art was in vogue. This limited edition boxed set was created to document Kent Monkman’s diptych commission mistikôsiwak (Wooden Boat People) for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Each hand-crafted box includes the ACI book Revision and Resistance: mistikôsiwak (Wooden Boat People)and two limited edition etchings, hand-painted, numbered, and signed by the artist. In 2019, the Metropolitan Museum of Art extended their illustrious Great Hall Commission to Kent Monkman to create an epic diptych. The diptych offers a critical counter-narrative of romanticized colonial histories found in European and North American paintings. Monkman appropriates and subverts these paintings, filtering them through his own Indigenous, queer lens. In both paintings (and both prints in the box set) Monkman's alter-ego, Miss Chief Share Eagle Testickle is the central character. Like Monkman, Miss Chief is Indigenous, two spirited and queer. She appears like a hybrid between a pin-up doll and a glamorous superhero with wind-blown hair, high-heels, and a muscular physique. Miss Chief plays the role of mythological trickster - appearing across places, times, and scenarios she wasn't actually in. Her powerful presence enlightens the viewer to recognize revisionist truths by representing the individuals and stories erased from historical narratives. Monkman's work disrupts depictions of historical representation and colonial narratives. Despite the sometimes dark subject matter it addresses, Monkman's art often exudes a winking playfulness and immense visual intrigue. Featuring commentaries by leading art world figures, this special box set also includes two photo essays, on the making and installation of the paintings. Monkman's monumental diptych is currently on display at The Met The National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Art, Art Gallery of Ontario, Vancouver Art Gallery, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian are just a few of the institutions that have Monkman's work in their permanent collection.
