Every Building on the Sunset Strip, 1st Edition, Signed & inscribed w/provenance
Located in New York, NY
“I don’t have any Seine River like Monet, I’ve just got US 66 between Oklahoma and Los Angeles.” — Ed Ruscha An example of this rare Artist Book was exhibited prominently at the Museum of Modern Art in New York for the 2023-4 Ed Ruscha retrospective. Keep scrolling right of header image to see installation photographs of that exhibit to show how MoMA displayed this accordion style book with slipcase. (the last images) This is the 1966 true 1st Edition of Ed Ruscha's groundbreaking self-published artist book "Every Building on Sunset Strip." The book itself was published in an unsigned edition of 1000. However, in 1980, exceptionally, Ruscha hand signed and beautifully inscribed this book in red ink to football legend Joe Fields. (Joseph Charles Fields Jr. is an American former professional football player who was a center and guard in the National Football League for the New York Jets and the New York Giants.) This book is also in the original slipcase. Dimensions slip case: 7 5/16 x 5 13/16 x 9/16" (18.5 x 14.7 x 1.5 cm) This historic limited edition Artists Book is in the permanent collection of the Getty Museum in California which explains its importance as follows: In the 1960s, Ed Ruscha more or less reinvented the artist’s book. By turning away from the craftsmanship and luxury status that typified the livre d’artiste in favor of the artistic idea or concept, expressed simply through photographs and text, Ruscha opened the genre to the possibilities of mass-production and distribution. The 25-foot length of the accordion-folded Every Building on the Sunset Strip affords the viewer two continuous photographic views of the mile and a half section of this landmark stretch of Sunset, one for each side of one of the city’s landmark thoroughfare. Among many other institutions, it also in the permanent collection of MOMA, which describes "Every Building on the Sunset Strip" thus: Ruscha's photography books are antithetical to the traditional limited-edition livre d'artiste, or artist's book. Their banal subject matter and documentary style are indebted to the remarkable pictures of signs and vernacular architecture that American photographer Walker Evans made in the 1930s, but their deadpan, cool aesthetic is radically different. While each book chronicles an aspect of Los Angeles or the artist's round-trip drives between LA and Oklahoma, their use of photography as a form of map-making or topographical study signals a conceptual, rather than documentary, thrust. Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999, Catalogue Raisonné, Engberg, vol. 1, ppg. 84-85 and vol. 2, pg. 124, no. B4 Publisher: Dick de Ruscha...

Measures about 3.75 X 3.5 inches. Box is 11 X 11 inches. (Piece is in excellent condition. box frame has some minor wear and piece might need to be remounted, it has been removed and the back taken off for the photograph.) Abstract Surrealist gold gilt cast bronze wearable art pendant sculpture (or silver, it is heavy) with precious or semi precious gem stones set into it. This is most probably from the series done with Mayer Swed Jewelers in Tel Aviv. Similar ones with gold gilding and semi precious gemstones from this series have come up at Tiroche auction in Herzliya with estimates from 2500$-3500$ (sold for 3220$ in 2011). This is from the period of the wearable art movement when artists like Alexander Calder, Ibram Lassaw and Clare Falkenstein amongst many others were turning to jewejry as an expressive medium for their art. Yigal Tumarkin (also Igael Tumarkin) (born 1933) is an Israeli painter and sculptor. Biography Peter Martin Gregor Heinrich Hellberg (later Yigal Tumarkin) was born in Dresden, Germany. His father, Martin Hellberg, was a German theater actor and director. His mother, Berta Gurevitch and his stepfather, Herzl Tumarkin, immigrated to Mandate Palestine when he was two. Tumarkin served in the Israeli Navy. After completing his military service, he studied sculpture in Ein Hod, a village of artists near Mount Carmel. Johanaan Peter worked there with Hans Jean Arp and Dada artist Marcel Janco pioneering Modernist studio Jewelry in Israel. Tumarkin did some Jewelry as awards for the state of Israel (along with Yaacov Agam, Jacques Lipchitz, Salvador Dali, Samuel Bak, Dani Karavan and others.) This is not from that edition but much more rare studio produced limited edition sculptural pieces. Among Tumarkin's best known works are the Holocaust memorial in Rabin Square, Tel Aviv and his sculptures commemorating fallen soldiers in the Negev. Tumarkin is also a theoretician and stage designer. In the 1950s, Tumarkin worked in East Berlin, Amsterdam, and Paris. Upon his return to Israel in 1961, he became a driving force behind the break from the charismatic monopoly of lyric abstraction there. Tumarkin created assemblages of found objects, generally with violent Expressionist undertones and decidedly unlyrical color. Hebrew. His determination to "be different" influenced his younger Israeli colleagues. The furor generated around Tumarkin's works, such as the old pair of trousers stuck to one of his pictures, intensified the mystique surrounding him.Tumarkin has worked extensively in the medium of printmaking, producing over three hundred prints. I love this extraordinary American surrealist piece - a collage/montage, an assembly of objects in a velvet-clad box/frame - for a number of reasons reasons. I love the fact that it depicts pipes, among the most iconic images of the surrealist movement, rooted in Magritte’s famous 1929 painting which depicts a pipe accompanied by the caption “Ceci n'est pas une pipe” (This is not a pipe). Hallmarked and gift boxed with a hand numbered edition card. Chain length: 28’’ Pendant width: 39mm Weight: 64g During lockdown, Grayson Perry, one of Britain's foremost artists, brought the nation together through art, helping them to unleash their creativity as part of his Channel 4 TV series made by Swan Films. Every week Grayson Perry hosted the show from his own studio, taking the country with him as he created his own new art works. Grayson and his wife Philippa talked to other famous artists and creatives about how they were spending their time in isolation and invited them to make their own works in response to this unprecedented crisis. Each week a different theme - portraits, animals, fantasy, view from my window, home, Britain - was explored. ‘When lockdown first started back in March my wife Philippa and I went for a walk around the deserted City of London one evening. We came back through Gough Square where Samuel Johnson’s house is and a sculpture of his cat Hodge. When I saw this small life-sized memorial to a pet I was inspired. I was thinking of London and its myths, like Dick Whittington whose cat has its own statue on Highgate Hill. Chris Whitty is the Chief Medical officer for England and Chief Advisor to the government during the crisis. He has become the face of the Covid pandemic...I was looking through sculptures of cats and one that really caught my eye was an Islamic...

His brother and sister-in-law, Jean and Valentine Hugo, were close friends of Picasso, Cocteau, Diaghilev, the Surrealists and many avant-garde artists in Paris, and François became part of their Salon gatherings. Picasso asked for his collaboration on the design and production of silver plates and later designs for gold jewellery too. Others, including Jean Cocteau and Max Ernst, followed his lead shortly after. In 1972, François' son Pierre joined the goldsmith workshop and added more names to his catalogue of designers, still specialising in limited, hand-made editions. This medallion is an excellent example of the collaboration between these most iconic of 20th Century artists and goldsmiths. "...In the period between 1956 and 1970 he had commissioned one of the most prominent goldsmiths working in France today, François Victor Hugo to execute a series of dishes, fruit bowls and medallions in gold and silver based on original models and designs. These objects are not posthumous "inventions" with motifs taken from various Picasso works; each was personally chosen, designed, seen, approved and cherished by Picasso himself during his lifetime ... Sterling silver pendant or brooch (it is designed to be worn either way) biomorphic, abstract form set with a buff colored river pebble. Designed by Jean Hans Arp and fabricated by Johanaan Peter of the Ein Hod artists village (founded by Dada artist Marcel Janco) from the limited edition of 100. Hallmark: stamped on the reverse: PETER EIN-HOD, MADE IN ISRAEL, ST925 DESIGN BY Arp, 55/100 Jean Arp or Hans Arp (16 September 1886 – 7 June 1966) was a German-French sculptor, painter, poet, and abstract artist in other media such as torn and collage pasted paper. Arp was born in Strasbourg, the son of a French mother and a German father, during the period following the Franco-Prussian War when the area was known as Alsace-Lorraine (Elsass-Lothringen in German) after France had ceded it to Germany in 1871. Following the return of Alsace to France at the end of World War I, French law determined that his name become "Jean". Arp would continue referring to himself as "Hans" when he spoke German. In 1904, after leaving the École des Arts et Métiers in Strasbourg, he went to Paris where he published his poetry for the first time. From 1905 to 1907, Arp studied at the Kunstschule in Weimar, Germany, and in 1908 went back to Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian. Arp was a founder-member of the Moderne Bund in Lucerne, participating in their exhibitions from 1911 to 1913. In 1912, he went to Munich, called on Wassily Kandinsky, the influential Russian painter and art theorist, was encouraged by him in his researches and exhibited with the Der Blaue Reiter group. Later that year, he took part in a major exhibition in Zürich, along with Henri Matisse, Robert Delaunay and Kandinsky. In Berlin in 1913, he was taken up by Herwarth Walden, the dealer and magazine editor who was at that time one of the most powerful figures in the European avant-garde. In 1915, he moved to Switzerland to take advantage of Swiss neutrality. In 1916, Hugo Ball opened the Cabaret Voltaire, which was to become the center of Dada activities in Zurich for a group that included Arp, Marcel Janco, Tristan Tzara, and others. In 1920, as Hans Arp, along with Max Ernst and the social activist Alfred Grünwald, he set up the Cologne Dada group. However, in 1925, his work also appeared in the first exhibition of the surrealist group at the Galérie Pierre in Paris. In 1926, Arp moved to the Paris suburb of Meudon. In 1931, he broke with the Surrealist movement to found Abstraction-Création, working with the Paris-based group Abstraction-Création and the periodical, Transition. Beginning in the 1930s, the artist expanded his efforts from collage and bas-relief to include bronze and stone sculptures. He produced several small works made of multiple elements that the viewer could pick up, separate, and rearrange into new configurations. Throughout the 1930s and until the end of his life, he wrote and published essays and poetry. In 1942, he fled from his home in Meudon to escape German occupation and lived in Zürich until the war ended. Arp visited New York City in 1949 for a solo exhibition at the Buchholz Gallery. In 1950, he was invited to execute a relief for the Harvard University Graduate Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts and would also be commissioned to do a mural at the UNESCO building in Paris. In 1958, a retrospective of Arp's work was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, followed by an exhibition at the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris, France, in 1962. Organized by the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Wurttembergischer Kunstverein of Stuttgart, a 150-piece exhibition titled "The Universe of Jean Arp" concluded an international six-city tour at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1986. The Musée d'art moderne et contemporain of Strasbourg houses many of his paintings and sculptures. Arp's career was distinguished with many awards including the Grand Prize for sculpture at the 1954 Venice Biennale, a sculpture prizes at the 1964 Pittsburgh International, the 1963 Grand Prix National des Arts, the 1964 Carnegie Prize, the 1965 Goethe Prize from the University of Hamburg, and then the Order of Merit with a Star of the German Republic. Arp and his first wife, the artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp, became French nationals in 1926. In the 1930s, they bought a piece of land in Clamart and built a house at the edge of a forest. Influenced by the Bauhaus, Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand, Taeuber designed it. She died in Zürich in 1943. After living in Zürich, Arp was to make Meudon his primary residence again in 1946. Arp married the collector Marguerite Hagenbach (1902–1994), his long-time companion, in 1959. He died in 1966, in Basel, Switzerland. The worlds of fashion, design, and art have long overlapped. The Surrealists were particularly keen on blurring the lines separating the creative fields, as a number of Surrealist artists dabbled in fashion and design, creating functional and wearable art. For example, Elsa Schiaparelli daring clothing designs were developed in collaboration with Salvador Dali and Jean Cocteau, and several other prominent Surrealist artists contributed to the fashion industry of their day. This is from the period of the wearable art movement when artists like Alexander Calder, Ibram Lassaw and Clare Falkenstein amongst many others were turning to jewelry as an expressive medium for their art. Untitled
By Norman Zammitt
Located in New York, NY
This dynamic and compelling sculpture was realized by the esteemed 20th Century sculptor Norman Zammitt in 1968. Constructed from baked enamels, acrylic and phenolic vinyls, the piece offers an a pair of identical amorphic lobe-like forms that are recur in multiplicity. The rectangular form composed of clear vinyl has two sheets of the same material within, each offering the aforementioned abstract motif- consisting of two royal blue tear drops with sable hued interiors and orange-cream ombre accents. These tear drop forms are adjoined by two translucent amber curved forms with opaque carnelian centers. Each of these identical abstract forms are affixed to each sheet of lucite at increasing heights, giving them a staggered appearance and the sculpture a subtle dynamism reminiscent consistent with the best examples of Op-Art from this period. Seen from each side, the work appears transparent, consisting of blue lines and revealing the layered construction of the piece. Phenomenological, dynamic and aesthetically compelling, this piece is sure to delight collectors of first rate 20th century art, as well as those with a penchant for rare and beautiful objects. Zammits' solo exhibits include the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (LACMA) and Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.. Group shows include two hallmark exhibits, “American sculpture of the Sixties” in 1967 and “The Spiritual in Art: Abstract Painting,” 1890-1985 that inaugurated the Robert O. Anderson Building at LACMA and the Hague, Holland. Among the museum and institutional collections in which he is represented are the MOMA in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Hirschhorn Museum. Private collections include those of Truman Capote (estate), John Kluge (estate) and Norman Lear...
