About the Item
This set is composed by 2 Autograph Letters Signed by Renato Guttuso and addressed to Gaetano Chiurazzi.
In 8. In Italian. One page, One side. Signed and dated. On ivory colored paper. In excellent conditions.
A couple of autograph letters marking the Guttuso's rejection of a not figurative art exhibited at the Venice Biennale and his awareness of his success.
In details:
A.L.S. August 10th 1958. Letter of greetings and invitation for his friend "Tanino", the gallerist of the "Chiurazzi's Shopwindow" in Via del Babbuino (Rome). It is interesting to notice how Guttuso plays with the words of The "Biennale di Venezia" called "La Banale di Venezia, (The trivial in Venice).
"Se la Banale di Venezia non ti avrà del tutto disgustato della pittura (...) passa da me".
A.L. S, dated September 18th, 1958. Letter of thanks of a sale. Interesting how Guttuso declines to partecipate at an exhibition in Rome.
Background:
During the years of this letter, Guttuso collaborates with the most important Italian and international magazines writings on theory and art criticism, taking a position in the debate on Realism. He paints The Discussion which will be purchased by the Tate Gallery in London. He works on the illustration of the Divine Comedy which will be published in '61 by Mondadori. Elio Vittorini writes an important monograph on the painter while his friend Pasolini will write an introduction for his book of drawings. In New York, the Aca-Heller Gallery dedicates an important exhibition to him. The Pushkin Museum in Moscow dedicated an important retrospective to him in '61.
Renato Guttuso (Bagheria, Sicily, 1911 – Rome, 1987),
The name of the Sicilian artist is always associated with artworks of strong moral and political engagement: he was a fervent opponent of fascism and a devoted communist, and as an artist he supported Socialist Realism.
Gaetano Chiurazzi, called Tanino (Naples, 1899- Rome, 1967)
Sent by his father, in 1925, to Rome to supervise the work of the second family foundry, as well as to take care of the exhibition hall in via del Babuino. His interest and activities moved from the field of bronzes to that of painting. Towards the end of the 1930s, alongside classical bronzes, he began to exhibit paintings by painters of the Roman school. After the Second World War the"Chiurazzi Shopwindow" became almost world-class, exclusively a painting gallery and thus became one of the most known in Rome. Chiurazzi inaugurated numerous solo exhibitions by contemporary artists such as Mino Maccari Filippo De Pisis, Mafai A. Raphael, Renato Guttuso, C. Levi C. Cagli, G. Morandi, C. Carrà, A. Soffici, G. De Chirico, O. Rosai . A great connoisseur of art, especially lover of figurative art, around the 1950s he also opened his gallery to abstract works of art by G. Dorazio, A. Perilli, G. Turcato, C. Accardi, T. Scialoia and others; He also welcomed works by foreign painters including S. Dalì, J. Ensor, M. Ernst, C. Pernieke, E. L. Kircimer. His activity, his knowledge in the artistic field, his personality together with his character led Chiurazzi to become friends with contemporary painters like De Pisis, Maccari, Rosai, Donghi, Guttuso, but also with exponents of the world literary including in particular G. Comisso, G. Ungaretti, A. Palazzeschi, L. De Libero.

As a black and white comic, the absence of color allows the artist to focus on using shading, line work, and contrast to convey the narrative and emotions effectively. Black and white comics creates a distinct and dramatic atmosphere, emphasizing the story's mood and capturing the readers' attention.
