About the Item

Harriet Thorpe "Fire Bird" Original Abstract Oil Painting c.1960s Excellent vintage abstract painting by California artist Harriet Thorpe. Created with oils on canvas and housed in a custom made frame. Canvas dimensions 28" x 36". The frame measures 36" x 44". Signed lower left and verso. Very good condition. Harriet Thorpe (1923-2012) Harriet Thorpe was born in New York City and studied at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union and the Art Students League. With her solid artistic training she eventually settled on the West Coast in California and quickly established her reputation with numerous museum and gallery exhibits. She showed at the Crocker Museum, San Francisco Art Museum, Oakland Museum, DeYoung Museum, Triton Museum, plus other venues. A number of galleries in California granted her one-person shows, including Maxwell Galleries, Villa Montalvo (University of California), Pacific Grove Art Center and Zantman Gallery in Carmel. Her abstract paintings include numerous interpretive landscapes and cityscapes plus a variety of other subjects. The landscapes often communicate a spirit of solitude and vastness. Op art and geometric abstracts were included as part of her oeuvre. Her goal was to paint not what one sees, but what one senses is there.

"Maine Farmer" A late 20th-Century Abstract Painting in Red, Black & White
Located in San Francisco, CA
Not the visual expected of a painting carrying the title “Maine Farmer.” But this abstract composition manages to convey the flinty resolve of men who support their families on the output of demanding and “generally infertile” soils, as described by the University of Maine. Thank the Lord for blueberries. Artist Abraham Elterman bestrides two countries. He was born in Mexico City and spent much of his education in the sciences, here in sequence: a B.Sc. in Physics at the nearly 475-year-old Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in his home town; a stint at Hebrew University of Jerusalem; a Ph.D. in Biophysics at the University of California, Berkeley; and then, taking a new direction with a residency in The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture located in Madison, Maine. Ah-ha, Maine! Elterman’s website lists 22 exhibitions in both Mexico and California, starting in 1986, and inclusion in group shows at the Monterey Museum of Art, Monterey, California and the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento...
