A leader of the cross-cultural craft resurgence, Japan-based artist Toyoharu Kii creates his intricate mosaics with hand-cut Italian marble and smalti, Venetian glass made by the same Italian family for over 400 years. Using traditional Italian techniques, Kii’s art is nonetheless modern. It is abstract monochromatic, and highly textured-highlighting the involved and technical art of mosaic making. Kii has come to be revered as one of Japan’s leading mosaic artists and teachers and has served as Chairman of the Mosaic Art Association. He currently lectures at Joshibi University of Art and Design and Musashino Art University. His work has been featured in exhibitions worldwide, most recently in exhibitions in the US, Turkey, and Ravenna, Italy. Kii also commissions incredible large-scale mosaic installations in public spaces.
