Presage: Paris Fashion Forecast. Numbers 1 & 2 in 6 numbers and 55 additional issues. Illustrated throughout with colour plates, fabric swatches and photographs. Small folio preserved in publisher's decorative board folders as issued. Paris: Société d'éditions de Mode, 1962-1987. A superb collection of issues of this visionary periodical which sought to predict the colours, styles, cuts, and fabrics of the coming seasons of Parisian haute-couture and pret-a-porter fashions in the expansive era of Yves Saint-Laurent, Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin, Guy Laroche, Capucci and Chloe. Presage was envisioned as an industry quarterly but eschewed traditional publishing formats and rejected advertising while producing a massive assemblage of up to the minute color samples and fabric swatches paired with graphically appealing texts, photographs and illustrations each on an unbound card which could easily be spread out on a cutting room table. Presage presents the peak of 1950s modernism and predicts the vibrant colors of the psychedelic 1960s. Présage was published in a somewhat complicated manner, and it is extremely difficult to ascertain just exactly how many issues were published. Among the titles for the individual issues were Lainages; Palette, Tissés; Jerseys ; Coloris and Sketch Future. The albums were originally produced to give a guide to the "fashion and women's clothing industries" as to what "Paris is promoting in the domain of colour and styling". Almost all the volumes reproduce fashion drawings, and have text and captions in English and French, often printed in vivid colors, describing the mounted, and inlaid and overlaid color samples and fabric swatches in lace, wool, cotton, silk, leather and other materials. Very few sets or even issues would appear to survive and the collection here offers an unrivalled look at the fashions of the period.
