Abie Loy Kemarre was born in 1972 at Utopia Station, located northeast of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. She is an Aboriginal artist belonging to the Anmatyerre language group and is considered one of the leading contemporary Indigenous painters of her generation. Abie Loy comes from a distinguished artistic lineage. She is the granddaughter of the acclaimed artist Kathleen Petyarre and the niece of Gloria Petyarre, both prominent figures in the Utopia art movement. She began painting in 1994 under the mentorship of her grandmother, who introduced her to intricate dot painting techniques used to create illusions of movement and depth. Her early works depicted the “Bush Hen Dreaming”, a Dreaming story passed down from her grandfather, using the characteristic dotting style of Central Desert art. Over time, Abie developed a more abstract and personal style. From 2001 onward, she began exploring more fluid and meditative compositions based on themes such as sand hills, female ceremonial body paint designs (Awelye), and the natural energy flows of the landscape. Her paintings are often described as hypnotic and mesmerizing, with a strong spiritual presence. Through her art, she has become a key figure in the third generation of female artists from Utopia, bringing a modern and innovative approach to ancestral traditions. Abie Loy Kemarre has been a finalist in the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in 1997 and 2001. Her works are included in prestigious collections such as the National Gallery of Victoria, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, the Musée des Confluences in Lyon, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. By channeling ancestral knowledge into vibrant contemporary forms, Abie Loy Kemarre plays a vital role in preserving and sharing Aboriginal culture with global audiences through her art.
