About the Item
I am primarily a painter of things and my practice has grown out of a process of subverting the genre of still life. For my most recent paintings I have been working in an improvisational manner and without any reference so that the imagery depicted is discovered as I paint. This way of working leads me to a painting I could not have taken a direct path to. I have been working on rounded organic shapes that come closer to our field of vision and better suit the forms I’ve been painting. Within these shaped paintings there is a sense of movement, precariousness and a depiction of unplanned growth in the imagery which is complimentary to the way the paintings unfold as paintings. I view my process and content as collaborators with each other, and that the subject matter has become representational of a process of growth, creation and change that lead to more complicated states of order.
Adam Gunn was both formed and grown in Nova Scotia and now currently dwells in Montreal. He has accumulated a BFA from NSCAD University in Halifax and an MFA from Concordia University in Montreal. He’s been a two-timer semi-finalist in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition and the Nova Scotian winner in BMO’s 1st! Art Competition. He thinks writing about himself in the third person is a bit strange, but he’ll do it anyway if that is the convention.

Adam Gunn
Adam Gunn's painting practice began with a desire to subvert the traditional still life genre, creating an absurd experience that would evoke a sense of uncertainty in the viewer. Initially, they painted from observed forms, exaggerating them and creating surreal compositions. However, their newer works incorporate a variety of sources, including imagination and organic processes to create indeterminate spaces and shapes. The artist is drawn to the unpredictable process that creates these forms and has begun painting in a more improvisational manner, balancing this with planning to emulate the process of natural evolution in their paintings. The artist received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and has been recognized for their works in various competitions, including being a finalist in the RBC Painting Competitions and a regional winner in the BMO 1st! Art competition. Originally from Nova Scotia, the artist currently resides in Montreal, pursuing graduate studies in art at Concordia University.
