By fraying, pulling, and cutting fabric apart, she allows it to shed its fixed function and become something raw and expressive. Her encaustic monotypes, made from molten pigmented wax, echoes the earth’s cycles of freezing and thawing, eruption and settling. Each print becomes a record of elemental flux. Enslen layers these materials by fusing them with beeswax and damar resin on birch panel, creating vessels for memory and experience. She is drawn to textiles that evoke personal history or resonate with a collective response. Lately, her palette has shifted to a range of bold earth-tones that, when combined with manipulated strands of thread, highlight a strong understanding of the material’s structure and her passion to collaborate with its spontaneous folds and intricacies About the artist: Alaina Enslen expresses her artistic vision through repurposed fabrics infused with beeswax. Enslen has exhibited her work internationally and nationally for over twenty years and is featured in the permanent collections at the West Point Museum and the Paul W. Bryant Museum. More about the artist: Alaina Enslen is a mixed media artist residing in Cornwall-On-Hudson, New York, a small village in the Hudson Valley. Having lived in many states across the US as well as in Japan, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, and England, her experiences with diverse cultures, identities, and beliefs throughout her life have deeply influenced her work. Her paintings, encaustics, and collages draw from materials collected from her subjects, memorabilia, fabric, and objects from the environment. Over the last twenty years, her art has been shown internationally and nationally, including an exhibition in 2017 at the Caleidoscópio (University of Lisbon). Her work is part of the permanent collections at the West Point Museum and the Paul W. Bryant Museum. Over the last twenty years, she has received a number of grants and awards including a nomination for Best Temporary Exhibition 2016 from the Portuguese Museological Association for “Bird-watching” (Museu da Ciência, University of Coimbra, 2016) and a Luso-American Development Foundation travel grant for FOLIO 2016. Her most recent series, Remnants, employs encaustic and fabric in bold designs to convey the emotive properties of cloth as experience and memory.

Little Blue, 2020 Encaustic & collage on thin edged board 12" X 12" This abstract geometric composition on wooden board features a playful geometric motif that is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The geometric forms are made in a more painterly, gestural manner rather than with a hard edge. Paint is not heavily built up upon the surface but it certainly exhibits a tactile quality which is characteristic of the artist's aesthetic. English's work celebrates the quirky, unexpected qualities of shapes and colors. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure.
