Vibrant and enigmatic, Numbers exemplifies Alan Davie’s late-career exploration of symbolic abstraction — a visual language rooted in improvisation, spirituality, and musical rhythm. Painted in 2012, the work’s compact scale belies its expressive power: bold marks and intuitive colour harmonies pulse with the energy that defined Davie’s lifelong engagement with the subconscious.
Alan Davie (1920–2014) was one of Britain’s most influential post-war artists, celebrated for his dynamic and instinctive style that bridged European abstraction and the energy of American Abstract Expressionism. Originally trained as a musician, Davie’s paintings often echo the structure and spontaneity of jazz, blending mythic imagery with gestural freedom. His work is represented in major international collections, including Tate Britain, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Alan Davie
Painter, born in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire. His father was also an artist and Davie junior was encouraged to enrol at Edinburgh College of Art, 1937-40, where he was taught by John Maxwell. Following army service with the Royal Artillery in World War II, Davie worked variously as a jazz musician, textile designer, potter and as a jewellery designer. In 1946, he held his first solo exhibition at Grant's Bookshop, Edinburgh and soon after travelled around Europe meeting Peggy Guggenheim which was to broaden his artistic outlook. His work over the years was much influenced by Abstract Expressionism, Oriental mysticism and Indian mythology. His first London show took place at Gimpel Fils, London in 1950 and his first New York exhibition at the Catherine Viviano Gallery, New York in 1956. During the 1960's and later many of Davie's drawings appeared in print form executed by the Curwen Press and also were seen in the eclectic magazine Motif. Davie was awarded the Gregory Fellowship at Leeds University 1957-59 and in 1962 he held a retrospective exhibition in Amsterdam at the Stedelijk Museum. Other retrospective exhibition venues include the McLellan Galleries, Glasgow, 1992, RWA Bristol, 1992, Barbican Art Gallery, London, 1993 and 'Jingling Space' held at Tate St. Ives. This highlighted Davie’s works from the 1930’s to the millennium. Examples of his work are in the collections of the City Arts Centre, Fleming Collection, Harrogate Art Gallery, Jerwood Foundation, Lillie Art Gallery, MoMa, New York, Museums Sheffield, NCAS, Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery, Tate Gallery, Towner Art Gallery, Ulster Museum, University of Warwick Art Collection, V&A, Worcester Art Gallery and major museums around the world including MoMA, New York. Alan Davies was appointed CBE in 1972, a senior member of the RA in 2012 and a major exhibition of his work opened at the Tate Britain a few days after his death.

Landscape abstraction
Watercolour and ink on paper
Signed, inscribed and dated ‘Landscape abstraction William Black 63’ (lower edge)
8 x 11.1/4 in. (20.3 x 28.3 cm.)
William Black is a little known and underrated member of the St Ives artist group who, having worked as an architect after the Second World War, went on to work as an artist following the inheritance of money in the early 1950s.
He was a self taught artist, producing numerous deconstructivist sculptures in the 1960s. He moved to St Ives in Cornwall where he knew artists such as Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo. There is a clear architectural element to the sculptures that he made . They illustrate an assemblage of fragmented shapes and forms of a deconstructivist nature.
William Black’s artwork is very much rooted in the time and Cornish School so one can see elements from those such as Wilhelmina Barns Graham...

Derrick Latimer Sayer (1912–1992) has been described as a Neo-Romantic and pop artist, with a career that spanned from the spiritualism of postwar English landscapes, to the bright, optical playfulness of 1960s Pop art. Sayer had a distinguished start to his career, having studied at the Chelsea School of Art in the early 1930s under Graham Sutherland and Henry Moore.
In 1936 he founded the Mousehole Group Art School in Cornwall with fellow painters George Lamborn and Guy Allen, and for the next few years he exhibited at a number of small local galleries, while also executing commercial advertising work for major companies such as Shell Oil. The 1940s and 50s were a period of widespread travelling, teaching and experimentation for Sayer, as he founded the Army Art Centre in 1945, worked in the South of France in 1949 and displayed works at the Leicester, Redfern and Winton Galleries across the 1950s. In 1966, he took up the helm as the Head of Art at the Chelsea Westminster Adult Education Institute, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. Ten of Derricks works can be found at the Chelsea Westminster Hospital Arts Project, hung alongside a permanent collection that includes Patrick Heron, Howard Hodgkin, and Sian Tucker.
Sayer was known for his studies of female nudes, particularly the examination of the nude in...
