Alan Davie is one of Scotland's most internationally recognised artists with works in public collections across the world.
As a young man, he developed a love of the arts, wrote poetry and played saxophone in a jazz band. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1938-40. In 1945 Davie was deeply impressed by two exhibitions: Picasso at the V&A and Klee at the Tate, and not long after he visited the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, where he came across the paintings of Jackson Pollock. These American Abstract Expressionists inspired Davie, alongside Surrealism and the Cobra group. Using these, he developed his own unique form of expression combining mythic imagery, enigmatic symbols and later taking inspiration from African and Oceanic art as well as Zen Buddhism.
In 1956 Davie made his first trip to the United States, where he was the subject of a solo exhibition at the Catherine Viviano Gallery where work sold to Deutsche Bank and Davie was introduced to Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning. The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art held a retrospective exhibition in 2000, which was followed by a survey the following year at the Cobra Museum of Modern Art in the Netherlands. In 2003-2004, the Tate St. Ives exhibition Jingling Space celebrated Davie's significant contribution to painting. David Bowie was known to be an admirer.

Alan Davie
Painter, born in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire. His father was also an artist and Davie junior was encouraged to enrol at Edinburgh College of Art, 1937-40, where he was taught by John Maxwell. Following army service with the Royal Artillery in World War II, Davie worked variously as a jazz musician, textile designer, potter and as a jewellery designer. In 1946, he held his first solo exhibition at Grant's Bookshop, Edinburgh and soon after travelled around Europe meeting Peggy Guggenheim which was to broaden his artistic outlook. His work over the years was much influenced by Abstract Expressionism, Oriental mysticism and Indian mythology. His first London show took place at Gimpel Fils, London in 1950 and his first New York exhibition at the Catherine Viviano Gallery, New York in 1956. During the 1960's and later many of Davie's drawings appeared in print form executed by the Curwen Press and also were seen in the eclectic magazine Motif. Davie was awarded the Gregory Fellowship at Leeds University 1957-59 and in 1962 he held a retrospective exhibition in Amsterdam at the Stedelijk Museum. Other retrospective exhibition venues include the McLellan Galleries, Glasgow, 1992, RWA Bristol, 1992, Barbican Art Gallery, London, 1993 and 'Jingling Space' held at Tate St. Ives. This highlighted Davie’s works from the 1930’s to the millennium. Examples of his work are in the collections of the City Arts Centre, Fleming Collection, Harrogate Art Gallery, Jerwood Foundation, Lillie Art Gallery, MoMa, New York, Museums Sheffield, NCAS, Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery, Tate Gallery, Towner Art Gallery, Ulster Museum, University of Warwick Art Collection, V&A, Worcester Art Gallery and major museums around the world including MoMA, New York. Alan Davies was appointed CBE in 1972, a senior member of the RA in 2012 and a major exhibition of his work opened at the Tate Britain a few days after his death.

Estuary IV, 2018 - Abstract Oil Painting with Found Objects (Feathers) in Grey
By Pamela Burns
Located in Kingsclere, GB
Pamela Burns is a British painter.
Burns was born in London and now lives in Pembrokeshire. She studied at the Royal Academy Schools until 1963 and later taught at St Martins and Chelsea College of Art, London.
The technique Burns uses is engrossing and it is hard not to wonder at how these paintings are made. The marks, as if enchased, in their repeated lines, have an almost hallucinogenic quality - one is fixated by their minute scale. Some have been painstakingly created in reverse, with the background colour revealing the contrasting lines. It is a technique with its own mystery, delicately matching the mysteries of her compositions.
Burns paintings from the 1970s and '80s were inspired by the neolithic landscapes of the South West and the deep-rutted fields that lie in the shadows of the Malvern Hills, drenched in the warm greys, endlessly variant greens and deep browns of England's mud-bound cores. In particular, she looked to Maiden Castle, Dorset, and Cherhill in Wiltshire, both sites where the chalky soil had slipped to form narrow parallel ridges along the contours of the landscape.
More recently Burns paintings have recorded the changing of the tides, first in Deal, Kent and now in Pembrokeshire. Unlike most coastal painters who tend to look across the surface of the water to the far horizon, Pamela's eye is always drawn back to the shore, to the point where the land melts into the sea. Her paintings record the changing of the tides, as the shore reclaims itself from the water, the parallel striations in the silt holding within their curved lines the imprint of the waves. The tidemarks themselves become a metonym for the process of erosion, a slow revelation of the bones of the land.
She has exhibited at the Cairn Gallery in Nailsworth (1990), a formative centre for Land Artists such as Richard Long and Hamish Fulton...
