Alayna Rose
"One" contemporary abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas by Alayna Rose

2017

About the Item

"One" is an original oil painting on canvas by Alayna Rose, signed in the lower left. In this composition, Rose has abstracted the side-profile of a head by filling it with an array of colors and shapes reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism. By combining a figural form with gestural abstraction, Rose reveals the innerworkings of the head's psyche—its thoughts and emotions, memories and recollections—as they bloom vibrantly into consciousness. The only relation that these fleeting thoughts have to one other is the shared space they occupy within the head; hence from the multitude of thoughts, emotions, and memories comes the 'one' symbolized by the head. Artwork Size: 24" x 36" Artist Bio: Alayna Rose is a painter, jewelry designer and former illustrator. Her paintings are abstract, painterly, and in vibrant color. They teeter between figuration and pure non-representation, following in the legacy of the Abstract Expressionists of the mid-twentieth century. Indeed, she studied with Kenn Kwint, a nationally recognized Wisconsin painter, as well as Gary Rosine, former department chair of Cardinal Stritch University’s Visual Studies Program. She was also mentored by one of Wisconsin’s most celebrated sculptors - Mary Nohl. Her paintings and watercolors have been shown at several Midwestern institutions. Her fashion jewelry has been featured in exclusive boutiques from Hawaii to the East Coast. In 1987 she was featured as an outstanding new designer in Accessories Magazine. Her copper enameled designs have been exhibited in shows in New York City, Chicago and other major venues in the United States. Between 1990-2007 she was Vice President of a design company that specialized in illustrations for patent applications, trademarks and technical art.

"Sun Totem" is an original acrylic painting on canvas signed and dated lower center by the artist Prospere Pierre Louis. It depicts a few contorted human figures in a totem pole arrangement in black and white, a yellow sun with a face in the center, and various brightly colored patterns on the sides. Artwork Size: 62 5/8" x 38 5/8" Frame Size: 73"x 49" Artist Bio: Prospere Pierre-Louis was born in Bainet, in the south of Haiti, on October 12, 1947. As a young boy, he did not go to school but did teach himself to play the drums and the violin. He assisted his father, a houngan (Vodou priest), in preparing Vodou ceremonies. At age 16 he moved to Port-au-Prince where he apprenticed as a barber for a time before working as a waiter at the home of Maude Robard who would in 1973, with the Haitian artist Tiga, organize a community of peasant artists, singers, dancers, craftspeople, actors and painters into a movement that was named Saint Soleil. Prosper followed his friend Maude to the community at Soisson-la-Montagne on the mountain above Laboule and eventually became the most prominent painter in the group. The Saint Soleil movement gained international recognition in 1975 when the French cultural icon Andre Malraux visited the community. It is said that Malraux was seated in a chair on a grassy knoll while the artists of Saint Soleil ascended the slope, encircling him, each holding a piece of their art. Malraux was blown away by the scene and immortalized the movement by featuring Saint Soleil prominently in his last book, " L'Intemporel." Saint Soleil disbanded after only a few years but five of the artists, Prosper Pierre-Louis, Levoy Exil...

Her distinctive artwork is well known in Uganda and throughout East Africa. Her bold, fluid lines explore complex subjects such as women empowerment and national development with economy and grace. Her central artistic preoccupation is the continuation of distinctively African culture. In 2007, she started her own label, Atal Stella.
