About the Item
This is an abstract painting characterized by both its round shape and the bright fields of colors used. The round form, called a tondo, provides a special way when displaying this painting. This work was painted on canvas adhered to a wood panel. The piece could be framed or exhibited as is, especially since metalwork for hanging is provided by the artist. The composition creates areas within the pictorial space, delineated by black and accentuated by grays, yellows, and tones of magenta. Pencil lines intersect the piece in various places, thus providing interest and adding a subtext to the design, This is the work of an artist who explores meanings of spirituality derived from Christianity and African religions. As such, this abstract painting is rich in meaning and content. This piece is signed by the artist in front and back.
Since arriving in New York City from Cuba in the mid 1990’s, Alexis Mendoza has carved a path as a painter, art writer, and independent curator. He trained as a conservator and graduated from college in Havana. He exhibits in museums and galleries worldwide.
