Alexis Portilla
72 x 96 in / 6 x 8 ft "Three of Us" Oil on Canvas (black white minimalist oil)

About the Item

This is a beautifully nuanced, and deeply soulful abstract contemporary oil painting on linen, that speaks volumes with its quietly furious brushstrokes multi-layered in monochromatics shades of whites and dark colors. Alexis Portilla obtained his Masters of Fine Arts at Columbia University in 1990. His bold linear lines, use of symbols, pictographs and strong colors create atmospheric abstracts. “Using simple forms and creating swathes of rich texture, Alexis Portilla builds atmospheric abstract paintings that convey a sense of time having passed. Brushy areas of color suggest the indeterminacy of memory, while bold linear forms speak for the present.” - Meredith Mendelsohn, Art News magazine review. Influenced by the emotion of artistic expression in music, poetry and literature, the artist finds bold expression in color, lines and shapes that resemble pictographs, and texture. We showcase this talented artist's sheer virtuosity both in style and use of varied medium which is apparent in his works in which he paints large oil abstracts as well as small delicate pieces made with layering of oil and beeswax (Pale Fire II) or his enamel and oil on wood (e.g. Ganymede"). He has shown in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His works have been commissioned by major corporations, universities and for private collections.
